The University of West Georgia Athletic Department, following various directives from the University System of Georgia, the NCAA and the Gulf South Conference, has suspended all athletic activity for an indefinite amount of time, it announced Friday in a news release.
UWG officials did not release an official statement as of Friday evening, but the GSC offered the following:
“In response to the continued impact of COVID-19, the Gulf South Conference has suspended all athletic competition, countable athletic related activities and off-campus recruiting for an indefinite period. This decision was made after thorough collaboration between the conference office, university presidents and chancellors, and the league’s athletic directors.”
The first impacted events for West Georgia will be baseball and softball this weekend, as the Wolves were originally scheduled to play Mississippi College in a three-game series with each sport on Saturday and Sunday.
UWG and the GSC will continue to monitor the situation with COVID-19, and announcements about future events will be available at uwgsports.com.
