A native of Douglasville, GA, Dr. Fincher was the son of the late Andrew and Ada Fincher. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Frances Cutts Fincher (married June 15, 1957). At the age of 17 he joined the Navy, serving on the USS Wasp during WWII. Upon completing his undergraduate degree at the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia, he attended the University of Minnesota receiving a Master of Arts in Psychology. Dr. Fincher earned his doctorate from The Ohio State University in 1956 and served as the Director of Counseling and Testing at Georgia State University. In 1965, he was hired by the University of Georgia and served as the Director of the Institute of Higher Education from 1969 to 1999. He was awarded the title of Regents Professor of Higher Education and Psychology in 1981. Dr. Fincher retired in August 2005 with 54 years of service to the University System of Georgia.
Survivors include children, Marcel Fincher (Jim Dibble) of Yorktown, VA, Matt Fincher of Spartanburg, SC, Mandy Montijo (Tim) of Escondido, CA, and Melissa Fincher of Atlanta, GA, and grandchildren, Lauren and Taylor Dibble, Matthew, Jackson, and Andrew Montijo.
Graveside services will be held at 12:15PM Wednesday, March 17th at Evergreen Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at 1PM at the University of Georgia Chapel with Rev. Andy Walton officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Tuesday, March 16th at Bernstein.
