Mr. Ronald L. Roberts, 67, of 245 Riverside Rd., Tallapoosa, Ga., passed away Feb. 18, 2010. Mr. Roberts was born Sept. 15, 1942, in Saint Helens, Ore., to the late Paul E. and Cleo Mae Schaeffer Roberts.

He retired from Delta Airlines after 26 years in Customer Service. He has been a substitute teacher and was very active in JROTC for Haralson County High School since 2002. He didn’t just drive the HCHS athletes to their different sporting events, he got out of the bus and cheered for him — something the kids who knew him will never forget. He was an avid fan of the University of Georgia Bulldogs and enjoyed traveling – especially to all four corners of the United States.

Mr. Roberts served for nine years in combat during Vietnam with the U. S. Navy. In 1967 he was attached: Commander Naval Air Force — Pacific Fleet, Counter Insurgency Training (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape). In 1968 he was attached to and involved with Headquarters Battalion 3rd Marine Division, DMZ (cua Vietnam River at Dong Ha) and was involved in the ‘Tet offensive.’ Mr. Roberts never mentioned his valiant involvement in Vietnam until the Vietnam Memorial Wall came to Tallapoosa last year. He was a quiet, calm, unassuming man who made a huge impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Stout Roberts of Tallapoosa; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Beth Roberts of Carrollton, Ga.; grandchildren, Dallas Roberts and Davis Roberts; step-children, Shannon McCracken of Fairburn, Ga., Serinda Moulton of Orlando, Fla., Honnie McCracken of Newnan, Ga., and Wade McCracken of Alpharetta, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law, Patty and George Jennings of Marionville, Mo.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Karen Roberts of Port Orchard, Wash., and Jim and Vicki Roberts of Auburn, Wash.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Ayers officiating. Poem and remembrances were shared by HCJROTC member Amber Grier. Following Amber, many of the JROTC members shared memories of their beloved Mr. Roberts. Music was provided by Davis Vaughan. Pallbearers serving were Dallas Roberts, James Wood, Greg West and members of the HC JROTC. Interment followed in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery with the JROTC and Haralson County Veterans Association providing full military honors.
