Boy Scouts to celebrate 100th birthday

February 8 marks the beginning of the centennial year of celebration for the Boy Scouts of America. The Atlanta Area Council (which includes the local Sweetwater District), Boy Scouts of America will celebrate the centennial birthday by planting 100 trees across the Atlanta area.

The Scouting movement came to America when an unknown Scout helped William D. Boyce find his way through the London fog to his destination. This good turn inspired Boyce to bring Scouting back to the America. By 1911 the first Boy Scout Troop was organized in the City of Atlanta. Five years later, the Scouting movement charted the Atlanta Area Council. Co-author of the first National Handbook for Boys, Allen A. Jameson was selected as the first Scout Executive of the Council.

Numerous local programs will take place in celebration of the 100th Anniversary throughout 2010, including:

FEBRUARY: 100th Birthday of BSA on Feb. 8, 2010, celebrated with 100 tree plantings across Atlanta

MARCH: Scouting for Food collects for the Atlanta Community Food Bank on March 27

APRIL: National Tour of Adventure Base 100 comes to the Dogwood Festival on April 16-18

MAY: Centennial Encampment at Bert Adams May 14-16 bringing nearly 5,000 Scouts together

AUGUST: Centennial Gala on Aug. 21

OCTOBER: ScoutFest 2010 at the Cobb Galleria Centre on Oct. 23 invites everyone in Atlanta to come experience Scouting.
