Parents ask for mercury answers

Parents of students at Temple High School attended the Carroll County Board of Education meeting Thursday to get their questions answered about the mercury found in the school’s gymnasium and to air their concerns.

Lesa Zaikowski, the mother of two daughters at the school, was disappointed that the school did not notify parents about the mercury.

“They had mentioned to me that there was a situation at the school inside the gymnasium and I just kind of shrugged it off,” Zaikowski said. “I thought something of that nature, I as a parent would have been notified.”

The first she heard about mercury being found in the gym was from a news report.

“That is just horrible,” she said. “There should have been a phone call, something.”

Temple resident Penny Ransom was concerned about how much mercury was in the building, the cleanup procedures and if any children could have been exposed.

Temple parent and officer of the Temple High Athletic Booster Club Phillip Wynne, was concerned that the school gymnasium would be put on the back burner despite the problem.

“The gym at Temple High School has been the topic of discussion for years,” Wynne said. “As a member of the community, I’ve heard that SPLOST would bring a new facility in the near future. It would have all the bells and whistles that a new facility could and should have, that the current facility could remain there as well, thereby enhancing the P.E. and athletics department. Then came the rains.”

The gym serves the school for athletic events and academic events. It has lockers and classroom space. It is the only part of the school that many visitors see. “Do the right thing,” Wynne said.

The gymnasium has been closed since Oct. 17 after flood damage repairs exposed some tile that looked like it could have contained asbestos. When the tile and the rubber flooring under it was tested, the mercury was discovered.

“This is all new to us,” Superintendent John Zauner told the parents. “There’s a lot of higher certification and standards for cleanup than what we’re used to dealing with in asbestos cleanup. So, it’s very, very different.”

Executive Director of Facilities and Construction David Goldberg explained the mercury was used as a bonding agent when the old rubber floor was installed in the 1960s. The mercury was not released until the school system started to rip out the flooring to clean up after damage was found from September’s flood.

“We are just as sensitive to the safety of our students and staff as the parents are,” Goldberg said. “No students were in the building when any of the rubber floor had started to be removed. All the students were gone and the place was closed up. No students were exposed.”

The system is working with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Georgia School Board Association and an environmental hygienist who will all have to sign off on the project before students are allowed to use the building again.”

“Part of the contract [requires] over 100 air quality tests,” Goldberg said. “We’re going to do air quality tests before we get started, during the process and after it’s over, we’re going to continue to monitor air quality.”

For anyone interested. Check out this story regarding the clean-up of 'less than one ounce' of mercury at a Twin Falls, Idaho apartment complex.

A hefty $50,000 cleaning bill!

Is this what we have to look forward too?

The problem I see in this case is the same problem in every other city in America – too much bureaucratic nonsense (read ‘too much government intervention’) required to accomplish a simple task. In this case, cleaning up a gymnasium floor and replacing it.

“The system is working with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, the U.S.

Are you KIDDING me? We’ll NEVER have the gym fixed now! ‘Environmental hygienist’ – what on Earth is that? This is ridiculous in my opinion.

The same government that goes nuts over traces of mercury found in the rubber insulation of a gym floor (built in the 1960’s!) doesn’t seem to have a problem with scaring the population into taking an H1N1 vaccine that, guess what, contains MERCURY!

As for the parents getting involved, I think more should. If more decent parents got involved with our school systems then our town would not have so many problems as it does now. However, don’t use a simple problem like this one to use your 5 minutes of microphone time to call other people names and make a fool out of yourself.

Why is it when anyone does something positive within our community we have some backwards uneducated moran such as the idiot who has posted below as "gotanidea" has to open their stupid trap and bring negativity. I was present at this school board meeting and only 5 concerned parents where present. With as many students that we have at our schools only 5 concerned parents show up to ask questions and relay their concerns. We are looking at a toxic deadly situation on the very campus that our children go to or soon will be going to! Not only that but we all can be assured that mercury vapors have seeped into the grounds of Temple which very well pose a health risk to those that live within the city. Hmm "gotanidea" instead of offering negative critism where it's not wanted nor needed why don't you go out and actually apply yourself to do something positive as the 5 parents did and actually make a difference within our community! Everyone in the city of Temple should be thanking those 5 citizens because many concerns were brought to light that have been over looked and just shrugged off because as everyone has realized we are known as the arm pit of Carroll County and who do we have to thank for that? The complete noninformed resident idiot such as "gotanidea" Thanks a**clown!!!! Board members personally thanked those for attending the meeting from Temple and encouraged them to continue their support! The meeting was recorded and can be seen on local channels. This article has nothing to do with mayor trash in fact it has nothing to do with the Waldens either. Why wasn't anyone from the elected city government there to ask questions they are a representation of our city! We are talking about a toxic element, mercury! Ohhhh that's right the uneducated a**clown thought we were all talking about the car thats rusting in his front yard that has 3 wheels off, hood up and that he hasn't quite gottin to runnin in awhile.......

gotanidea, how sad that a Temple resident could take something as serious as Mercury contaminating our high school gym and try and make it about Rick Ford, the Walden's or Penny Ransom. The last time I checked self centered individuals didn't take time out of their self centered lives to ask questions about mercury contamination and the possible effects to the students or the protocol for clean up. It is self centered individuals who sit back, do nothing if it doesn't effect them or their children, never speak up when their voice needs to be heard, but bitch about those who do in secret. The article doesn't mention the waldens being at this meeting, nor anything about the Mayor or his trash. Mercury is serious. I am going to assume you don't have children in school because if you DO and the only problem or concern you have is with Mrs. Ransom asking questions while you disregard the fact that the uniforms have been contaminated, the building is contaminated, the students can not use the gym, and no one knows exactly what will be the protocol for clean up. The problem is not white trash in temple. The problem is people like gotanidea who cant let one issue alone to focus on the community coming together for the sake of our children. I am glad parents went and asked questions, perhaps now there will be some clear answers.

Oh it is so good to have good 'ole negative complaining Penny Ransom getting into this!

But Penny - here is how to handle this - just make one phone call to our dear Mayor Rick Ford - he is a ture EXPERT at clearing and dumping out trash, debris, and unwanted materials. It will be no problem for dear 'ole lying, cheating, bully Mayor Ford to totally take care of this.

In fact, if the city doesn't need this trash then Mayor Ford might dump it in the Walden's trailor park - that would give then something else to yell and scream about and sue the city over. What a little messed up town we have all let Temple become with the Fords, Waldens, and Ransoms leading the pack! They are all nothing but trouble makers and self-centered individuals!

Talk about WHITE TRASH - we have got it in Temple!
