Prospective bidders for the new Douglas County Jail and Law Enforcement Center will learn more about the $150 million project today.
An informational meeting on the construction project has been scheduled for 10 a.m. today in Citizens Hall at the county courthouse. The meeting is being presented by the county’s purchasing department and comprehensive program services.
“During the meeting, the entire scope of the project will be reviewed, trade packages identified and tentative dates for release of the work,” said Wes Tallon, county communications and community relations director.
Tallon said each attending firm will be asked to provide contact information, types of business, service or trades an other relevant data so that all firms are afforded the same opportunity to received project announcements and are treated equitably.
The $150 million jail, with a capacity for 1,500 inmates, will be built on county property near the courthouse. Douglas County voters on Nov. 3 approved a referendum to finance the jail with a 1-cent special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) with collections beginning next April 1. The term of the SPLOST is six years or until $150 million is raised, whichever comes first. The referendum also included a provision for a $120 million bond issue so that the jail work could begin immediately.
