Douglas County residents who suffered damage in the September 20-23 flooding have only a week remaining to file claims for FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) assistance. The deadline is Nov. 23.

Once the Nov. 23 deadline passes, no more flood damage applications will be accepted, FEMA officials emphasize.

The correct form to apply for FEMA assistance is the SBA (Small Business Administration) application.

“Complete the SBA application and return it, even if you don’t want an SBA loan,” Wes Tallon, county communications and community relations director, emphasized. “It may help kick in additional FEMA assistance. You can turn down the loan offer later. An application doesn’t obligate you to accept a loan.”

Tallon noted that assistance is not automatic even though the county was designated under a Federal Disaster Declaration.

“You must apply for assistance,” he said. “If you wait until after Nov. 23, it will be too late.”

Applications may be made by calling 1-800-621-3362 or by going online to the FEMA Internet site at www.fema.gov.

The 17 Georgia counties included in the federal disaster declaration included Bartow, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, Heard, Newton, Paulding, Rockdale, Stephens and Walker.

SBA may not be right for you but for many it is the perfect way to get the money they need to rebuild. I work for a local volunteer group that is rebuilding 60 homes in CObb County. I advise families to work with SBA to refinance their current mortgage. If you have been approved for any amount with them they will usally allow you to refiance the 1st mortgage as well. This could half your payments, with the rate of 2.75% being offered to most, this is an unbelievable chance to turn the disaster into your favor. Most homeowners we work with have been able to get additional funds to purchase their lost furniture and applicances because of the SBA refinance loan. Their payments are less in most cases or about the same as before. The SBA does not make you start paying the loan back for around 5 months which can also help you get back on track after you are back in your home or waiting for it to be rebuilt. I pray you and your family get back in your home soon. J

NO ONE WANTS OR CAN AFFORD THEIR LOANS !!!! SBA WONT APPROVE LOANS LESS THAN $10,000 BECAUSE THEY CANT ATTACH YOUR PROPERTY......OVER $10,000 THEY PUT A LEIN AGAINST YOU PROPERTY(LIKE A SECOND MORTGAGE), THAT IS NOW WORTH LESS BECAUSE YOUR NEIGHBOR WONT FIX HIS HOUSE !!! AND A SECOND REALLY COMPLICATES FUTURE REFINANCING !!!! FEMA GRANTS ARE JUST AS BOGUS....THEY WON'T GIVE YOU FUNDS TO HELP FIX YOUR HOUSE ( GO SEE THE SBA FOR THAT) BUT THEY WILL GIVE YOU A CRAPPY VACUUM CLEANER AND SOME PAPER TOWELS. THANKS OBAMA
