Board of Tax Assessors

Festival of Trees
The Buchanan-Haralson Library will host the Haralson Historical Society’s Festival of Trees once again this year. This year the society asks that everyone pick a food-related theme to honor the upcoming Smithsonian exhibit, “Key Ingredients: America by Food.” Participants can start setting their trees up on Tuesday, Dec. 1, during library hours. Voting for People’s Choice will start on Dec. 1 as well and run through noon Dec. 5 ($50 prize!). For more information, call Karen Higgins at 678-644-0743.
Key Ingredients
To keep the Smithsonian Institution’s display “Key Ingredients: America by Food” safe and open to the community, volunteers are needed to serve, as they are able, for the duration of the exhibition. The hours the display will be open is directly tied to how many volunteers join the project. The exhibit will be at the Buchanan-Haralson Public Library from Jan. 2 to Feb. 6. Senior activities
The Senior Citizens Center in Buchanan will have a lunch and movie on Nov. 6, at noon at the HC activity center. The movie will be “I’d Climb the Highest Mountain.” Aerobics will be Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 10 a.m. A basic self defense class will be Nov. 12 taught by the sheriff’s department. A Thanksgiving dinner will be at 11:30 a.m. with a Bingo game sponsored by Southern Traditions on the 24th at 10 a.m.
5K Freedom Run
The Haralson County Veterans Association is sponsoring Third Annual 5K Freedom Run/1 Mile Fun Run & Walk on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the League-Lowe Memorial Park on Highway 100 in Tallapoosa. Pre-Registration through 5 p.m. on Nov. 6 is $10 per individual or $20 per family. Race Day registration is $15. The race starts at 8 a.m. All proceeds go to the HCVA College Scholarship Fund, which awards outstanding students for their leadership and citizenship. Senior dance
There will be a senior dance with a live country band, Ken Rosenberg and Sweetwater Creek, at Punkin’s Place in Tallapoosa, every Saturday night, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. $4 admission. Bring snacks. For information call 770-258-7002.
Horse fun show
A Horsen’ Around Fun Day Fun Show will be held Nov. 14 at Possum Snout Arena in Tallapoosa. Classes for all ages include Pewee, Youth, Jr. and Open. Trophies and ribbons will be awarded. Registration is at 11 a.m. and events start at noon. For information call 770-574-8104.
Walk-N-Talk
Walk-N-Talk is a new kind of book club that will take place at 6 p.m. each Wednesday at the Buchanan-Haralson Public Library. Join us.
Chili Cook-off
Come join us in Downtown Bremen to see who has the best chili around on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Chili Cook-off will feature cooks and their teams vying for cash prizes. Purchase your wristband, which will give you access to the event, all you can eat chili and your vote for the “People’s Choice Award.” Soft drinks, water and other items will be sold throughout the event. Admission ($5 for adults and $2 for children) will be sold at the gate. Vendor registration forms are available on-line at www.bremenrec.org or come by the Parks & Registration office and sign up, the entry fee will be $20. Master Gardener Course
Anyone interested in becoming a Haralson County Master Gardener is invited to register for the training program that will be taught at the Carroll County Agriculture Center from January through April. The training program will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Applications are available at the Haralson County Extension Office and will be accepted through Nov. 20. Tallapoosa Recreation Department
The Tallapoosa Recreation Dept. Basketball Registration and Cheerleading Registration will be through Nov. 6. Basketball boys and girls ages 5 - 14, cost $45 in city; $50 out of city. Veterans Motorcycle Ride
The 5th Annual Veterans Freedom Motorcycle Ride is an 80 mile police-escorted ride through every community and city in Haralson County to benefit the Veterans Memorial Park in Tallapoosa. Registration begins 9 a.m. and ride begin at 10:30 a.m. and part of Tallapoosa’s Veterans parade, Saturday, Nov. 7. $25 per bike: includes event T-shirt, American flag and lunch. $10 for an additional rider. Ride originates at Veterans Memorial Park, Highway 100 at Taliaferro Street in Tallapoosa and ends at nearby Helton Howland Veterans Park on US 78. Information: 770-537-4708.
Turkey Shoot
The Haralson County Chamber of Commerce will hold a Turkey Shoot (12 gauge and 20 gauge only) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7 (rain day Saturday, Nov. 14) at West Georgia Youth Range (off Hwy 78-Landfill Road, Tallapoosa). Tallatoona CAP, Inc.
Tallatoona CAP, Inc. will start our FY 2010 Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program starting Nov. 2 for the elderly population (seniors 65 or older and homebound households) Nov. 2 - 30. Application will be taken from all Segments of the population as follows: Dec. 1 - until all funds are exhausted or program ends. Crisis funds will also be available Dec. 1. These funds are available for disconnects and LP gas tank with 5 percent or less. Energy assistance applicants will be seen Mon.-Fri. by appointment only. Buchanan Primary School Performs
Second graders from Buchanan Primary School will perform a “Salute to Our Veterans” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Haralson County High School Performing Arts Center. The students will present several patriotic pieces to honor our veterans.
