Busy weekend around town as arts festival, quilting convention on tap

This is a busy, eventful weekend for Carrollton, with many locals and out-of-town folks ready to dish out and receive a little of the Southern hospitality that the city has become famous for.

• The Carrollton Artist Guild is holding the Carrollton Fine Arts and Crafts Mecca Festival today and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center. The festival features artists from across the country who have been chosen by a jury process to participate. Free children’s activities and entertainment. Admission and parking are free. • The Georgia Quilt Council Fall Convention, ‘Saving Our Quilt Heritage,’ will be today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carroll County Ag Center. Speakers will be Flavin Glover, quilt author, Judy Schwender, curator of collections at National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Ky., and Doug Mabry, a Carroll County historian. For information visit www.georgiaquiltcouncil.com.

Why is the festival called "MeccaFest?" To most people, theat makes it sound like a Muslim gathering. If Muslim art is not your thing, you would probably avoid going. The name is misleading AND keeps many people from attending (from neighboring counties AND Carroll County. Change the name, the crowds will grow.
