The Car Dudes for Christ Ministry is doing its part to help victims of last week’s floods.
The registration fee for their Charity Car Show tomorrow (Oct. 3) will be waived.
Instead, the ministry is accepting donations to help families who have lost essential items in the floods.
In lieu of the original registration fee, it is asking participants to donate towels, diapers, cleaning supplies, toiletries, soap, canned food and paper products. Cash donations will also be accepted.
“We just want people to bring stuff,” said John Garrett, a member of the ministry. “Everything will be donated immediately and directly to flood victims.”
Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at the show’s location, 5919 Stewart Parkway, in the old Wal-Mart parking lot in Douglasville. It will feature cars, trucks, customs and traditional hot rods, but there will be activities for the entire family, Garrett said. There will be food, door prizes, raffles and inflatables for the kids, as well as an auction, silent auction and swap meet.
Trophies for Best of Show, Best Paint, Engine, Interior and more will be awarded. Judging will start at 12:45 and trophies will be awarded at 3:30 p.m.
Giving is not new to the Car Dudes ministry.
A part of the Pavilion Church in Douglasville, it helps the less fortunate by performing basic automobile repairs the individuals can’t ordinarily afford. Many who benefit from their service are single mothers.
Garrett said the ministry started by accident about two years ago when a few men got involved with helping a lady who needed work done on her car.
It was a “feel-good” moment, but since then, they have met once a month doing repairs for those down on their luck. The men don’t perform major repairs like engines or transmission, but they fix brakes, change oil and do tune-ups. All the work is done at little or no cost.
They have also purchased a couple of cars, fixed them up and given them away.
Originally, the registration fee was to keep the ministry going. Now its goal is to help others rebuild their lives, according to Garrett.
