A body, believed to be that of a missing Carroll County woman who disappeared during last week’s flooding in Douglas County, was recovered about 3:30 p.m. Monday on the banks of the Dog River reservoir.
Coroner Randy Daniel said a county search team found the remains which have been sent to the State Crime Lab in Atlanta for positive identification. He said officials are not releasing a name until the identification is confirmed.
The wrecked vehicle of the missing Carroll County woman was found last week in Mobley Creek off State Highway 5 in Douglas County after major flooding in the area.
Earlier Monday, Chief Deputy Stan Copeland said that rescue officials were hoping the water level would recede enough to bring in cadaver-sniffing dogs to resume the search Thursday.
“We’ll try again, searching from Banks Mill Road, all the way to the reservoir along Dog River,” Copeland said. “There’s a huge debris field, 10 feet high in some places.”
He said the woman’s purse was found in the submerged Jeep Liberty.
Sheriff Phil Miller said the vehicle was located last week by a helicopter pilot near the junction of Mobley Creek and Dog River.
The search was suspended on Saturday after heavy rains again hit the area, but was resumed Sunday and continued through the afternoon before being halted again.
“It’s a tedious operation and we’re going to have to let the water get down some more,” Copeland said.
Six people are known dead in Douglas County from last week’s flooding, part of a statewide total of nine.
Gov. Sonny Perdue declared a state of emergency in 17 counties, paving the way for use of state personnel and equipment.
The counties of Walker, Carroll, Chattooga, Cherokee, Cobb, Douglas, Paulding and Stephens have received federal disaster classification.
