Maryann Humphrey loved playing handheld remote games like Yahtzee and poker.

And she loved her family, especially her daughter, Karen Kaiser, and 16-year-old granddaughter, Kailyn.

She even liked working at night and had just been named the night shift clerk at the Circle K last week, after another clerk left.

Humphrey was gunned down Monday night by an armed robber at the store on West Stewart Mill Road and Highway 5.

She would have been 63 Dec. 1.

Two of Humphrey’s brothers and a former sister-in-law want everyone to know her as a viable, lively woman and not just another statistic, they said. They willingly shared the story of her life.

Humphrey grew up in Prince Georges County, Md., the fourth of nine children — seven boys and two girls.

Her brothers, Harry and Michael Humphrey, talked about her Wednesday, while her former sister-in-law, Barbara Humphrey phoned in from San Leandro, Calif.

She married and divorced twice and traveled extensively when she was married to a military man.

She lived in North Carolina, Germany, Texas, San Diego and Kansas, one of her brothers said Wednesday.

Humphrey had been a clerk or cashier most of her life, Harry said. His former wife, Barbara, agreed.

“She was very good at her work, a job that most people wouldn’t have valued,” Barbara said.

Humphrey moved to Douglasville from Kansas to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. She had lived with brother Harry for about a year.

Harry said Humphrey wasn’t “outdoor active” but liked to watch movies and play those handheld games. Michael remembered that she also liked being on the computer.

They said she was thinking about retiring from work in several years.

Barbara Humphrey’s pain was almost tangible Wednesday. While she wants to celebrate Maryann’s life, she said Humphrey was “like a sitting duck” in her job and should have been better protected.

“We loved her so much,” Barbara Humphrey said. “She is from a large family that cared so much about her,”

The brothers agreed. Harry said it’s something you never get used to.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Officer Major Case Unit is still investigating Humphrey’s murder, and no arrest has been made.

Services for Humphrey will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Tom Wages Funeral Home in Lawrenceville.

Law enforcement authorities believe the suspect is either white or Hispanic and describe him as a man of small frame, possibly in his teens or early 20s.

A $20,000 award has been offered for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information may call 770-949-5656 or access the Tip Line at www.sheriff.douglas.ga.us.

I agree that Douglasville is getting more and more dangerous. My wife and I stay very close to the Circle K and actually heard the gunshots!!! I hope they catch this punk really soon (and I do believe they will) because this crime really has us ready to leave Douglasville...and quickly!!!

I have been to that convenient store many, many times and witnessed a customer being rude & hostile toward Cashier Maryann. My sister was with me and we were shocked by the "punk" which ended up calling her a name and stormed out of the store. Maryann seemed experienced with low class people like that and didnt flinch.

I hope the animal gets caught and prosecuted (executed would be acceptable too)

My heart goes out to Maryann's family and loved ones and hope God sits in your hearts through this.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Maryann's family, I stop in there frequently and had the pleasure of getting to know Maryann, she was such and sweet and lively woman. I hope this person is caught and given to him what he deserves. From what I understand from another clerk at Circle K that he didn't get away with nothing but pocket change, this is very very sad. Hopefully with the $20000 reward being offered justice will be served soon.

I hope this piece of scum is caught and hanged by the neck until dead. I know though that if and when his caught, the system will have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on his defense and he will be portrayed as a misunderstood person or else he will be described as a good person who is a pillar in society. How much was this woman's life worth, $100, $200 to kill her for?

Douglasville is getting more and more dangerous with the thugs from Atlanta moving westward.

If anyone hears or suspects anything, now is the time to earn $20,000. Any friends of this animal should turn him because this is probably more than they can earn in 10 years.
