Hiram continued to roll, East Paulding had an easy win and North Paulding picked up its first football win of the season while Paulding County and South Paulding fell to region rivals Friday night.
Hiram’s offense continued to play well, leading the Hornets to a 49-14 victory over visiting Cass.
Trey Wesley, a key offensive threat for the Hornets, did not play due to an injury in the Northwest Whitfield game, but others on offense came through for the Hornets.
“Our offense had a good week of practice leading up to the game and they took the opening drive for a touchdown,” said Hornet coach Andy Dorsey.
“We threw the ball well and also had a good running game.”
Dorsey said the offense worked on throwing to different receivers due to the double teaming of wide receiver Dylan Cook, and the move paid off for Hiram as the Hornets used the tight end and several other receivers to pick up yards.
After Hiram took a 14-0 lead, Cass scored to cut the margin to 14-7.
Hiram’s defense took over and did not allow another touchdown until late in the game after the starters had finished for the night.
The Hornets are now 3-0 on the season and are one of only two undefeated teams in Region 7-AAAA.
Next up for the Hornets will be Northgate at Hiram on Friday night.
“They are a big physical team that likes to control the ball with a running attack,” said Dorsey.
Raiders roll
East Paulding enjoyed its first home game of the season and had no difficulty in defeating region foe South Cobb 36-0.
South Cobb was enjoying a winning record against the Raiders before going into the game. The Eagles had only one scoring opportunity in the first half, missing a 46-yard field goal after the Raider defense held South Cobb following an East Paulding fumble deep in Raiders territory.
After the missed field goal, the Raiders needed only three plays to score, using a 51-yard pass from Idris Anderson to Brian Lackey and a 24-yard scamper by Harold Queen.
Nick St. Germain added the PAT and the Raiders led 7-0 with only four minutes gone in the first quarter.
The Raiders got on the board again early in the second quarter on a 43-yard pass play from Anderson to Ayman Hasan, capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Johnny Vite.
St. Germain added the extra point and the Raiders led 14-0 early in the second quarter.
East Paulding picked up the third touchdown of the half when a South Cobb fumble was recovered by the Raiders on the Eagles’ 17 yard line.
The Raiders had to overcome a holding call before Queen took it in from eight yards out to extend the lead to 21-0.
In the second half, the Raiders marched 80 yards for a score, with Hasan taking the bal across the goal line.
Kevin Olson returned a fumble recovery 40 yards for a touchdown and the defense added a safety.
The Raiders had 240 yards rushing and 125 passing while holding South Cobb to 134 total yards.
East Paulding and McEachern are the only two undefeated teams in the region, and the Raiders will travel to McEachern Friday night.
Spartans lose
Dalton used some big plays to score just before the half to knot the game vs. South Paulding at 14-14. Dalton went on to post a 35-14 win.
“You cannot give up a score like we did just before the half,” said Spartan coach Tim Glanton.
Glanton said the score by Dalton gave it the momentum, and that made the difference in the game.
“I was disappointed in how we played defensively,” added Glanton.
Brandon Black once again played extremely well on offense for the Spartans, gaining 97 yards on 15 carries.
“Brandon is doing a great job for us and when we get Jared Jeter back from an injury we will be more versatile on offense,” said Glanton.
Next up for the Spartans is Ringgold, in a game expected to be a tough contest for the Spartans.
