Carrollton residents will soon have the opportunity to vote on Sunday alcohol by the drink sales, with the Carrollton City Council’s decision Monday night to put a referendum on the ballot.

As it will appear on the ballot, the referendum reads, “Shall the governing authority of the City of Carrollton be authorized to permit and regulate Sunday sales of distilled spirits or alcoholic beverages for beverage purposes by the drink?” Voters will have the chance to vote yes or no.

Should it be passed with a majority vote, restaurants within the city limits who meet a number of requirements would be able to sell alcohol by the drink from 12:30 p.m. to midnight on Sundays. State law prohibits Sunday sales of packaged alcoholic beverages at stores, but a number of cities across the state have voted to allow by-the-drink sales on Sunday, including Villa Rica.

State law mandates that any municipality voting to allow Sunday sales limit the privilege to restaurants that derive half of all their annual gross sales from food and to hotels and motels that derive 50 percent of their total annual gross revenue sales to the rental of room or overnight lodging.

While no date for the vote has been set, the resolution approved by the council request Carroll County Elections Supervisor Patti Brown-Traylor to, between 10 and 60 days from the date of the resolution, issue the call for an election and then set the election date for some time between 10 and 60 days following the issuance of the call.
