It’s less than three days into qualifying for the November municipal elections, and 22 people have already thrown their hats into the political ring.
Carroll County Elections Supervisor Patti Brown-Traylor said she has been surprised by the number of candidates qualifying on Monday and Tuesday.
The pace slowed slightly on Wednesday but has remained robust. She said turnout is significantly higher than in years past, though she couldn’t offer a guess as to why this was the case.
“Yes, it’s much higher than normal,” she said. “I just don’t know why.”
She said, typically, municipal elections don’t see the kind of voter turnout as other statewide and national elections and, as a result, don’t see as many candidates.
This year appears to be an exception to the rule, with nearly two dozen already qualifying for 14 elected positions in Carrollton, Bowdon, Mt. Zion, Temple, Villa Rica and Whitesburg.
Altogether, there are 19 seats up for grabs in the Nov. 3 election, though five of those positions have yet to have anyone qualify.
Qualifying continues this week with the deadline set at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, at the David Perry County Administration Building at 423 College St. in Carrollton.
