After eluding Alabama authorities on a chase and allegedly throwing a methamphetamine lab from the window of a moving car, a Muscadine, Ala., man was caught a day later when he stopped to buy ephedrine in Carroll County.
Carroll County sheriff’s Investigator Telisha Gibson said Phillip Chad Holland, 32, was arrested and charged Thursday with possession of methamphetamine and felony possession of marijuana.
Gibson said she was at the South Park Street Wal-Mart pharmacy waiting in line behind customers to pick up the store’s ephedrine log when she spotted an alleged very nervous Holland standing in front of her purchasing some ephedrine-based cold medication. Officers with the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement unit, which is a joint effort between the Sheriff’s Office and Carrollton police, routinely check the state-mandated ephedrine logs for unusual or bulk purchases. The over-the-counter drug is used to manufacture methamphetamine, a highly addictive narcotic.
Gibson said after Holland had made his purchase he fled the store, and officers saw him give a woman in the parking lot the medication before he left as a passenger in a pickup truck.
Gibson said ACE officers stopped the pickup on Stripling Chapel Road near the retail store. About $200 in methamphetamine and more than $4,000 of freshly picked marijuana that was kept in three mayonnaise jars was found inside the vehicle, according to deputies.
Gibson said Holland was wanted by Cleburne County authorities in Alabama for manufacturing methamphetamine after he allegedly eluded arrest in a pursuit on Wednesday. Authorities said that, during the chase, Holland allegedly threw out a methamphetamine lab and approximately 22 grams of methamphetamine before he escaped.
Alabama authorities were able to recover the alleged methamphetamine lab Wednesday.
Holland claimed the marijuana and methamphetamine, Gibson said. Neither the driver of the pickup nor the woman who had taken possession of the ephedrine cold medication were charged.
Authorities said Holland is being held at the Carroll County jail without bond.
