ROME — The soggy field conditions were not a factor for the Darlington football team on Friday night.

The Tigers posted 453 rushing yards in a 41-13 win over visiting Mt. Zion at Chris Hunter Stadium.

Will Orr led the way with 154 yards of rushing and scored two touchdowns as the Tigers improved to 2-2 in Region 6-A and 4-4 overall. Mt. Zion fell to 4-5, and remained winless (0-5) in the region.

After posting 62 yards of rushing in the first quarter, Orr led off with a 62-yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the second half to put the Tigers ahead for good. Orr recorded all 154 yards in the first half.

Despite running the ball to the Mt. Zion 5-yard line on five straight carries by Orr, Darlington found itself in an early hole after Octavius Thomas picked off a pass from Nash Nance and returned the ball 95 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

The Tigers rebounded and made it 7-6 just before the end of the first quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run by Orr, which capped a 73-yard drive. Orr had his extra-point attempt blocked, leaving Mt. Zion ahead after the first quarter of play.

Nash Nance made it a 20-7 lead at the half when he scored on a 1-yard quarterback plunge with just over three minutes before the half. After a Collie Powers touchdown run made it 27-7, Nance threw for an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jay Stephens who made a juggling catch in the end zone.

The Tigers outgained the Eagles 502-192 in the game.

Christian Heard accounted for 90 rushing on 19 carries for the Eagles. He had the only offensive touchdown for Mt. Zion on a 6-yard run up the middle with 43 seconds left in the game.
