The Bowdon High School football team will have its home opener tonight at 7:30 when Haralson County comes to Warren P. Sewell Field for a non-region contest.

The Red Devils will look to build on last week’s promising showing when they defeated Woodland, Ala., 19-6, on the road, while the Rebels will try and rebound from a 39-0 home setback at the hands of Hillgrove.

What proved to be a drastically different opening night for both squads saw the Red Devils (1-0) shut down a potent Bobcat offense, while Haralson County (0-1) had trouble in several areas of play against the Hawks.

Rebel coach Frank Vohun noted that several of the Rebels misfortunes in the game came from mental mistakes, something he said the team would address at practice this week.

Bowdon coach Dwight Hochstetler, meanwhile, was relatively pleased with his team’s effort, as the backfield platoon of seniors Ivan Glenn and J.J. Beasley, along with junior Jordon Loveless, all performed well, while junior signal-caller Avery Cheeks efficiently ran the offense.

In tonight’s meeting, Bowdon will look to avenge last season’s 31-13 loss to Haralson County after it had defeated the Rebels, 34-18, in 2006.

Tonight opens a three-game homestand for the Red Devils, as Temple comes in next week. After the bye week on Sept. 19, Bowdon opens its Region 6-A schedule at home on Sept. 26 against Darlington.

The Rebels return home next week to play host to West Laurens.
