Volunteers joined law enforcement personnel and firefighters Thursday to search for a missing 17-year-old Haralson County girl.
Brittany Carrigg, a junior at Haralson County High School, was last seen at 9 p.m. Wednesday walking on foot on Corinth Poseyville Road near the community of Corinth in western Haralson County. According to Haralson County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Jim Beck, Carrigg is approximately 5-feet-8 and 130 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing jeans, a white shirt and tennis shoes.
Haralson County Sheriff Eddie Mixon said investigators have been working to locate Carrigg since Wednesday night. On Thursday morning the sheriff’s office, Haralson County Fire Department and Haralson County Emergency Management established a mobile base of operations in the parking lot of the Union Hill First Congregational Methodist Church off Morgan Road.
The search was being conducted over about five square miles around Corinth Poseyville Road, stretching as far north as Highway 120 west of Buchanan and as far south as Old Bremen Road near the Bremen city limits.
“The search is going good,” said Haralson County Fire Department Chief Brian Walker, who was coordinating the search. “We have the weather and we have some really hard terrain to cover with swamps and creeks. We have our work cut out for us.”
Carrigg’s family was at the mobile headquarters at the Union Hall church. They declined to speak to the media, but J.R. McElroy, her uncle, said he felt the county agencies were working hard to find Carrigg.
“They’re doing their best and putting out a good effort,” said McElroy. “We just want her home safe.”
Mixon said he had spoken with Brittany’s parents and tried to keep them optimistic about the search.
“Our own mind can drive us crazy sometimes,” said Mixon. “We have to be positive and upbeat because there are two ways of looking at things, the cup being half full or half empty. We like to look at it as being half full and get her home back to her parents safely.”
Mixon and Walker said there was no indication of foul play, and no evidence of an abduction.
“We want to find her as safe as possible and get her back home to her parents,” said Mixon. “Our biggest concern is her safety and well-being at this point.”
According to Walker, the search is utilizing 100 men and women from various agencies in Haralson and the surrounding counties. On Thursday morning, the Georgia State Patrol used a helicopter to search but it had to be recalled due to overcast skies and rainfall. Some of the volunteers who joined the search brought their own all-terrain vehicles, with one volunteer bringing two horses.
By the late afternoon, members from fire departments in Carroll, Polk and Heard counties had joined the search. It was uncertain whether the search would be continued throughout Thursday night and into Friday morning.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Carrigg should contact the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office at 770-646-2011.
