DR. MYRON ARONS
Dr. Myron M. Arons of Carrollton, passed away peacefully in his home February 18, 2008.
“Mike” was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1929. He retired from the University of West Georgia in 2000 after serving on the faculty since 1968, when he was invited to come create and chair a Humanistic Psychology program. In perfect Mike Arons fashion of not following the “usual” academic path, he received his doctorate of Philosophy from the Sorbonne in Paris under the directorship of Paul Ricoeur, and later his Master’s degree in Psychology from Brandeis University, where he studied with Abraham Maslow. Mike taught in Gabon, Africa, with his wife, Christiane, before moving back to the United States and then helped pioneer the Humanistic Psychology program at Prince Edward Island College in Canada upon Maslow’s recommendation. Mike published or presented over 250 papers in countries such as France, Canada, Japan, China, South Africa, USA, Russia, Italy, Denmark (where he lived and taught as well), the Netherlands, Tahiti, Sweden, Norway, Mexico and Germany. He loved to travel and create professional and personal ties abroad. Mike received many honors and awards, including the first Abraham Maslow award presented by the division 32 of the American Psychological Association in 1999. Always ready for a good debate, Mike brought the concept of the Philo Caf© to Carrollton and was prolific in writing letters to local and national newspapers as a true Democrat.
Coming from the North, Mike grew to love and appreciate the beauty, warmth and softness of the South and the hospitality of the people. He reciprocated this love by organizing receptions on his beautiful land along Whooping Creek. He leaves behind good longtime friends and colleagues with whom he met regularly in town for challenging and heated discussions, as well as a multitude of students who loved him and kept in close contact with him over the years because they realized that Mike’s love for teaching was immeasurable and that he understood learning to be a mutual exchange. Mike went back to teach his last class Fall semester of 2007. Mike’s full presence, his humor, his wisdom, his love, will be terribly missed by his wife, with whom he celebrated his 45th wedding anniversary in 2007, and his daughter, Sandrine, of Paris, France. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Roy and Toby Arons of Bloomfield, Michigan; and by his brother-in-law and wife, Dr. Guy and Dr. Larissa Feve of Paris, France.
A memorial service was held on February 22 at UWG. In his honor, donations may be given for the Mike Arons’ Humanistic Psychology Scholarship to the Psychology department at the University of West Georgia, Maple Street, Carrollton, GA 30118.
