With the ball falling the way it was for the Bremen girls basketball team Friday night, the Lady Blue Devils were more than content to launch three-point shots from all over the court.

The Lady Blue Devils attempted 14 three-pointers in their season-opener at home against Ranburne and made all but four of them as they coasted to a 74-44 victory.

Jennisea Whitaker and Haley Sewell each had four treys for Bremen, which shot 76.3 percent from the field (29-of-38).

As happy as Bremen coach Kathy Matthews was with her team’s shooting performance, she was even more satisfied with the Lady Blue Devils’ defensive intensity.

“You’re going to have nights where you’re not hitting like we were hitting (Friday), but if every night you play with the same defensive intensity or pick it up a notch, then you’ll hopefully be able to win,” Matthews said.

Bremen was able to break out to a large first-half lead with a mixture of sharp perimeter shooting and steals.

Ranburne stayed close at 29-18 early in the second quarter until Bremen went on a 17-4 run over the final 5:30.

Whitaker and Sewell both hit a three-pointer during that run, but the majority of the points came off steals or defensive rebounds that the speedy Lady Blue Devils were able to turn into easy lay-ups on the ensuing rush up the court.

Bremen has experience at the guard position with two seniors and a junior starting. Whitaker and Jenn Davison are both seniors, while Sewell is a junior.

Matthews said it’s tough to predict how well the offense will perform going into the first game of the season, but having that experience in the backcourt is a big boost for Bremen.

“As the old saying goes, they’ve been to the circus before,” Matthews said. “They handled the pressure real well.”

Those three players accounted for all of Bremen’s first 19 points. Whitaker opened the game with a pair of three-pointers before Davison hit one and then later made a pair of free throws.

Already ahead 46-22 at halftime, Bremen opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run to grab a 57-24 advantage, its largest of the game.

Sewell led the Lady Blue Devils in scoring with 26 points, while Whitaker and Davison each added 21 and 12 points, respectively. Taylor Jennings also reached double digits for Bremen with 10 points.
