Bluefins make early splash|Finish second at three-day Fall Classic and break several team records
The Carrollton Bluefins swim team came in second place in the three-day Fall Classic held over the weekend at Lakeshore Natatorium. The Bluefins finished with a combined team score of 2,025 points, which left them 230 points behind first-place Chattahoochee Gold.
Bluefins coach David Weeks said at this early stage of the season he’s more focused on self-improvement than having his swimmers beat their competitors.
“We try to emphasize, more than anything else, beating yourself instead of beating the other people,” Weeks said. “The time will take care of itself.”
The Bluefins’ overall percentage of best times was 52 percent, which Weeks said fell in line with what he expected.
A total of 14 teams and 470 swimmers competed at the 23rd Annual Fall Classic, which is the largest meet the Bluefins will host all year. The Bluefins were the largest team competing with 128 swimmers. Chattahoochee Gold, based out of Marietta, was second with 74 swimmers.
For the younger kids, the meet was an opportunity to gain experience. The Bluefins had over 50 kids that were swimming at their first meet.
For the older swimmers, it provided a chance to work on their distance swimming.
“Our kids swimming distance did really well,” Weeks said. “This part of the season is more distance-oriented, so for that to happen they did some good things.”
Joshua Grover, competing in the 11-12 boys age bracket, led the Bluefins in first-place finishes with eight. Grover, 12, broke the Bluefins’ 26-year record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:15.79.
