The Carrollton Bluefins have found themselves in a two-way battle with Chattahoochee Gold this weekend at the 2007 Fall Classic at Lakeshore Natatorium.
In the 13-team meet, the two swimming squads have a sizeable lead over the competition, as the Bluefins trail in the combined team score by the slim margin of 1,138.50 to 1,124.50 entering today’s final day of action in the three-day event.
The girls team is currently leading its opponents with a score of 545.50 points, ahead of its nearest competition in Douglas County (505) and Chattahoochee Gold (465). The boys team is right on the heels of Chattahoochee Gold (673.50) with 579 points. The next closest team is Southern Crescent (261.50).
Top finishers for the Bluefins include: Joshua Grover in the boys 11-12 200-yard IM (2:31.54), the 200-yard freestyle (2:16.03), the 100-yard butterfly (1:08.87) and the 100-yard IM (1:07.68). Connor Pierce also recorded top finishes for the Bluefins, winning the boys 500-yard freestyle (4:55.14), 400-yard IM (4:21.82) and 100-yard freestyle (49.55), while Cade Crews was the other boys winner, taking first in the 8&U 50-yard breaststroke (46.50).
Top finishers for the girls are Cassie Griffin in the 9-10 50-yard backstroke (36.75) and Kelly Fazio, who won both the 13-14 200-yard breaststroke (2:40.24) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.28).
Another note of interest from the meet has been the performance of Ashley Owens, who swims for the Tara Tarpons.
Owens, a para-olympic athlete, who holds three American records in S10, established two new American records in a pair of events Saturday.
The Fall Classic concludes today with an 8:30 a.m. start.
