Monday was the first day of qualifying in Carroll County for any candidates interested in running for municipal seats that are up for grabs in November.
By 4 p.m., only one candidate had officially qualified to run for the District 4 seat on the Carroll County Board of Commissioners, vacated last June by Jimmy Godbee, who decided to run for commission chairman in the wake of former Chairman Robert Barr’s abrupt resignation.
The special election for commission chairman will be held Sept. 18, but county residents will go to the polls on general election day -- Nov. 6 -- to replace Godbee.
The deadline for registering to vote in the Sept. 18 election has passed, but residents can still register for the Nov. 6 general election up until Monday, Oct. 9.
The cities of Bowdon and Villa Rica received the most attention Monday, with candidates for mayor and city council seats in both cities qualifying, but Patti Brown-Traylor, Carroll County elections Supervisor, pointed out that the qualifying period continues throughout the week until the deadline of 4:30 p.m. Friday, and said she expects candidates to trickle in until the end.
“Some people are watching to see who’s running before they decide to get in,” Traylor said.
Mayor Wayne Garner of Carrollton is running for reelection, and as of Monday no one had yet qualified to oppose him. Also, Rusty Dean from Villa Rica, a former county commissioner who represented District 2, is running for mayor of Villa Rica -- the only candidate so far to qualify for that seat, though incumbent J. Collins announced earlier he would seek reelection.
Candidates interested in qualifying can do so between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. all week in the Election Supervisor’s office at 423 College St. in Carrollton, and should contact the Board of Elections and Registrations at 770-562-3369 for more information, or visit the Web site at www.carrollgaelections.com.
