A case of logistics saw the end of the Central team basketball camp close out in the Villa Rica High School gymnasium Wednesday.
With only Villa Rica, Temple and Haralson County on the schedule to play one another, Wildcat coach Jason Robinson figured it made more sense travel-wise for everyone to just stay closer to home.
“Instead of making that trip to Central, us and Temple, we’re right there together, we just rolled it over to our gym (Wednesday),” Robinson said.
And it’s not that the home-court advantage means much in summer ball anyway, as each team used Wednesday’s camp finale to focus on the little details.
“We scrimmaged for two 20-minute halves like we had been doing, but we were just working on things,” Robinson said. “Like if they were wanting to work against man defense, we ran man defense. If they wanted to work on zone, we ran zone defense and they did the same thing. So it worked out good for everybody.”
Villa Rica won both of its contests, playing Temple and Haralson County once each, while the Tigers and Rebels were able to get in three games apiece, two for their varsity squads and one for the younger players.
“It went good,” Robinson said. “You know, we won both games, but we were really just working on little things. Little intricacies that we haven’t been executing correctly in our other games, so it was good work for everybody. Everybody got the opportunity to work on the things they needed to.”
One particular point Robinson wanted to focus on at this week’s Central camp was the mental approach his team brought between the lines each day.
“We started out at the Carrollton camp (the week before) and we lost the first game every day,” he said. “We weren’t prepared coming out. We weren’t ready to play I didn’t feel like. And we really talked about this week, coming out that first game and executing early and then rolling it over into the second game and it really worked out well for us.”
And while this camp has finished up, Robinson is now looking forward to next week’s Temple team camp, the last his team will play this summer.
“They got some good competition coming in there, so we’ll get a better idea of where we stand at this time next week,” Robinson said. “That’ll finish up our summer work.”
They’ll get eight games in at the Temple camp and the big thing there will be a chance to play against some different teams, as opposed to what the Wildcats have seen at Carrollton and Central these past two weeks.
“Carrollton and (the Temple camp) are the two most competitive camps,” Robinson said. “They’ve got a number of different schools (at Temple). We play each other so much around here that everybody knows what everybody’s going to do. They know what you’re running on offense and defense, so it’s good to get to go and get to see other teams.”
