The Haralson County Fire Department responded to an unusual scene at a gas station Tuesday morning, requiring them to put down their fire hoses and help deliver a baby.

At approximately 6 a.m., Station 5 firefighters responded to a call requesting assistance for a young pregnant woman who was going into labor at the Shell gas station located between I-20 and the Tallapoosa exit into the city, according to Haralson County Fire Chief Brian Walker.

Firefighters Joey Bell and Richard Crawford set up near the front of the parking lot, where they delivered a baby girl who weighed in at 6 pounds and measured 18 inches long. Firefighters took about a half-hour to perform the delivery, which took place just minutes before EMS personnel came to the scene to provide assistance.

Walker said he’s unsure if the woman expected to go into labor on that day; however, time didn’t permit her to leave the gas station in order to deliver the baby at the hospital.

Walker applauded local public safety workers for helping ensure a safe and successful delivery for the mother and child.

“I’d like to commend Joey and Richard for a job well done as well as the local public safety personnel for their efforts,” he said.

Ambucare workers later transported the mother and child to Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton to receive further care. Bell reported the mother and child are “doing fine” and recovering nicely.
