Battling its way back from the loser’s bracket, the Tamiami All-Stars will get another shot at unbeaten Temple Terrace this morning in the finals of the Mustang Division of the PONY South Zone East Region at Winston Park. Game time is 10 a.m. and Tamiami needs two wins to take the title.
Tamiami opened play Saturday morning with a 13-2 victory over Bounday Waters and followed that with an 11-1 win over Orlando.
In the opener, Tamiami scored four runs in the top of the first against Boundary Waters. A pair of walks followed by a three-run homer by Pedro Pages did most of the damage.
Boundary Waters scored one its its first at-bat as J.T. Siekerman walked and came around to score on a hit by P.J. Milner.
After scoring once in the second, Tamiami added four in the top of the third to go up 9-1. A triple by Rick Duran and two walks were keys to the rally.
In the bottom of the third, Zack Covington’s double led to a Boudary Waters run.
Tamiami wrapped up the game, scoring four runs in the fourth as walks and errors helped the winners wrap up the contest. Afrer holding Boundary Waters scoreless in the last of the fourth, Tamiami was the winner due to the 10-run rule.
Brian Perez was the winning pitcher for Tamiami.
Duran set the offensive pace for Tamiami, with a double and a triple. Matt Mejas added a single and double, while Javier Valdez added a double.
Bounday Waters, the Georgia State champions, was guilty of seven walks and four errors.
Tamiami rips Orlando
Tamiami then put together an equally impressive victory over Orlando.
Orlando took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second before Tamiami scored twice in its half of the second. Pages doubled and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Later, Mike Mejas singled home the go-ahead run.
Tamiami broke the game open in the third, scoring seven runs. Duran led off with a walk and Freddie Zamora had an RBI single before Javier Valdez’s hit scored Zamora to make it 4-1.
Orlando’s starting pitcher Ruben Saldana was hit in the leg with Valdez’s line drive and was forced to leave the game.
Handy Rodriguez’s RBI double made it 5-1 and and Pages singled home the sixth run.
RBI hits by Pedro Sanchez, Mejas and Duran rounded out the third inning scoring.
Needing just two runs to end the game via the run rule in the last of the fourth, Valdez singled and scored on a ground out. The final run came home on a sacrifice fly by Javier Martinez.
Sanchez was the starting and winning pitcher for Tamiami.
Temple Terrace edged Tamiami 5-4 in the opening round, and didn’t have to play Saturday.
