The Carroll County 9 & Under All-Stars nearly pulled off an unthinkable comeback after falling behind 13-9 in the seventh inning of their Dizzy Dean State Tournament nightcap against Northside Youth Organization on Tuesday at the Carroll County Parks and Recreation Athletic Complex, but the Lions fell just short in a 13-12 loss.

An inning earlier, with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Nick Montalto’s RBI double to left field scored Dylan Wyble to tie the game 9-9 and force a seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, Carroll County gave up four runs and could have easily thrown in the towel.

Instead, the Lions started a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, as Dylan High reached on an error before Dylan McKinley and Wyble drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Then Steven Stotts launched a three-run double to the center-field fence to cut it to 13-12. Montalto then hit a grounder hard down the first-base line, but the NYO first baseman snagged the ball and tagged first to end Carroll County’s frantic rally.

Wyble was 3-for-4 with four RBI in the nightcap. Stotts was 3-for-5 with five RBI.

The Lions used five straight hits, from High, McKinley, Wyble, Stotts and Montalto, in the first inning to get off to a good start against NYO and eventually build an 8-2 edge before falling into an 8-8 tie. From there, the incredible, down-to-the-wire battle heated up.

Carroll County’s all-out effort in the second game Tuesday was even more impressive because it came after a tough 21-4 loss to the Wills Park Sharks, which advanced to the championship game.

Even with the pair of losses, the Lions finished up with a 3-2 mark and a third-place finish in the 9-year-old Class B Dizzy Dean State Tournament.

Carroll County used strong efforts on the mound from McKinley, Stotts and Wyble in the NYO game to first build the lead and then stay in the game when things weren’t going as well.

Carroll County will host the 8 & under Dizzy Dean softball state tournament this weekend, marking the final event of its nearly three weeks of hosting Dizzy Dean State Tournaments for various age groups of baseball and softball.

I'd like to thank the times-Georgian for sending Clark Leonard to our park for the past few days. Our boys have worked very hard this year, and we couldn't be more proud of how far they made in the state tournament. Mr. Leonard was able to capture the excitement over the past couple of days, and was there in the stands as our boys worked their hardest to take the win in that final game. Many thanks from the parents, the family members and the Carroll county Lions 9U team for spot lighting them and their love for the game.....Baseball.
