Eagles storm back for region triumph

The Mt. Zion High School baseball team erased an 11-3 deficit to pick up its first region win of the season on Thursday evening, as the Eagles came back to defeat Whitefield Academy in a 12-11 barnburner.

Tristen Puckett led the Eagles (2-10, 1-5 Region 6A-A) with a 3-for-4 night and three runs scored, while Tyler Watts was 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBI and three runs scored. Garrett Frazier (2-for-3, sac, BB, 2 RBI), Nate Warren (1-for-4, 2 RBI) and James Bragg (1-for-3, BB, 3 runs) contributed offensively.

Dylan Maxwell picked up the win after throwing six innings of scoreless relief.

MZ will try to keep the momentum going on Monday when it travels to face Fellowship Christian at 4:30 p.m.

Carrollton girls 7, Fayette County 2:
After a slow start to the game, the No. 5 Lady Trojans (8-3, 4-0 Region 5-AAAA) came through in the second half to pick up the region victory on the road Thursday night.

Lauren Dressander and Sarah Bryan led Carrollton with two goals each, while Emily Adams, Isabel Rothschadl and Elizabeth Harrison each found the back of the net, as well.

Carrollton will host Shaw on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a makeup game.

Carrollton boys 4, Fayette County 0: Tyler Edwards and Kevin Sosa had two goals and an assist each, as the No. 5 Trojans (7-3-1, 4-0) shut out Fayette County on the road.

Edwards opened the scoring on a goal from Sosa 12 minutes into the game and the score would remain 1-0 heading into halftime. To start the second half, Edwards scored his second goal, this time assisted by Alejandro Vargas.

Sosa scored his goal with 13 minutes left, as Edwards returned the favor and then Sosa finished off the scoring with an unassisted goal.

Carrollton will get its toughest region test to date on Monday when it hosts No. 10 Columbus at 8 p.m.

Central girls 2, Troup 0: The Lady Lions (4-3) used their usual offensive suspects and a stout defense to pick up the shutout win at Troup.

Wesli Simmons opened the scoring on a penalty kick, with AnnaLeah Deese adding the second goal for Central.

The defense of Savannah McWhorter, Tifini Smith, Amber Powell, Hannah Farmer and Jessica Pelaza did the rest in keeping the Lady Tigers off the scoreboard.

Central will line up again today when it travels to Mt. Zion at 5 p.m.

Chapel Hill girls 2, Mt. Zion 1: Jessica Green scored the lone Lady Eagle goal in Thursday night's loss. MZ will host Central at 5 p.m. today.

Chapel Hill boys 4, Mt. Zion 2: Yobel Zuniga struck twice and Javier Martinez had an assist, but it wasn't enough for the Eagles on Thursday night. MZ hosts Central today at 7 p.m.

Prep Tennis

Carrollton boys 4, LaGrange 1:
The Trojans (10-2, 5-0 Region 5-AAAA) remained perfect in the region on the road in LaGrange on Thursday night.

Garrett Brown, Mark Swindle and Samuel Campbell swept singles, while the No. 2 pairing of Conner Mount and Joseph Hendricks picked up a victory in doubles.

The Trojans face Marist at 4 p.m. at Blackburn Tennis Center.

LaGrange girls 4, Carrollton 1: Jamie Bryant picked up the only win for the Lady Trojans (5-7, 2-3) at No. 1 singles at LaGrange on Thursday night. Carrollton will face Marist at Marist on Monday at 4 p.m.

Bremen girls 5, Trion 0: The Lady Blue Devils (7-1) dropped just one set on the day, as they swept Trion.

At No. 3 singles, Emily Cheshier didn't drop a point, winning 6-0, 6-0, while No. 1 Meg Cummings (6-2, 6-2) and No. 2 Charli Allen (6-3, 6-0) also got wins. In doubles, the No. 1 pairing of Alexis Nappi and Elizabeth Knott (2-6, 6-3, 10-2) came back from dropping their first set, while No. 2 Kelli Coats/Charlotte Williams (6-2, 6-1) also won.

In an exhibition match, Natalie Noles won, 6-1.

Central boys 5, Douglass 0: The Lions (9-4, 4-1) traveled to Atlanta to get a Region 4-AAA win on Thursday night.

Aaron Startup took his No. 1 singles match in straight 6-0, 6-0 sets, while Tommy White won 6-1, 6-2. In doubles, Jarrett Thomas and Andrew Toney won their match, 6-0, 6-0.

In No. 3 singles, Ben Lewis and the No. 2 pairing of Jacob Barnes and Alex Stewart won by default.

Central girls 5, Douglass 0: The Lady Lions (11-3, 6-0) dropped just won point on the night in a sweep of Douglass on the road Thursday.

Sydney Stone won her No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0, with the doubles teams Emily Bush/Lauren Bush (6-1, 6-0) and Mary Kate Sailors/Elizabeth Minick (6-0, 6-0) also picking up wins.

Emily Startup and Denney Meigs won their singles matches by default.
