Problems in the field continued to plague the Lithia Springs baseball team Friday night as they fell to Villa Rica 8-2. It wasn’t all Lion defensive problems in the loss. The Wildcats came to play and hit the cover off the ball on several occasions led by D-I recruit and leadoff hitter Wade Bailey.

Bailey opened the scoring for Villa Rica in the first inning. He led off with a doubled over the leftfielder’s head off Lithia starter Dave Patel and then stole third. Bailey scored on a swinging bunt down the third base line by Zach Dutton. Dutton was thrown out at second trying to advance on a wild throw to first. Stephen Kegley reached base and scored from second on a double to left-center by Brandon Miller.

Weston Smith reached on an infield hit and Lance Agan was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Alex Holdbrooks hit a grounder to short for what looked like the third out of the inning but the ball was thrown over the first baseman’s head and two runs scored.

The Lions got one of the run back in the bottom of the inning when Patel walked, reached second on an error off a pickoff attempt, and then scored on a bloop hit down the right field line by Isaiah Frank. Frank took second as the Villa Rica rightfielder struggled to pick up the ball and advanced to third on a wild pitch with two outs. However, he would be stranded on base.

The second inning started the same as the first for the Wildcats, with Bailey hitting a leadoff double and then stealing third. He scored on a flyball to right off the bat of Kegley that was misplayed by the fielder. With no outs, Villa Rica put runners on second and third but Lithia third baseman Justice Fehr made a tough play on a low line drive and then doubled the runner off the bag. Patel would get out of the jam.

The Lions advanced a runner to third in the bottom of the second when Fehr reached on an error, was moved to second on a sac bunt and advanced to third on a swinging bunt. He would not score. The inning ended the night for Wildcat starter Michael Nolan. Nolan allowed one hits over his three innings of work.

Villa Rica added two runs in the top of the fifth for a 7-1 lead. Kegley led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a balk. He scored on a single to left by Miller. The Wildcats loaded the bases on a error and a walk and the second run came in on a Holdbrooks flyout to left.

The eight run for Villa Rica came in the fifth off a rare error on a flyball by Franks in center with a runner on second. Patel threw a scoreless sixth, ending his night on the mound.

Mikey Poligano threw the final four innings for the Wildcats. He allowed two hits, both in the seventh inning. Garrett Voyles singled on a soft liner to center and Dalton Carroll singled to right. The Lions scored a run in the seventh on a wild pitch.
