Melba Doris Walker Carnes, 89, of Villa Rica died Monday, March 11, 2013, in Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica.

She was born on March 5, 1924, the daughter of the late William Fletcher (Bud) Walker and the late Elizabeth Faye Shirah (Lizzie) Walker. She lived most of her life in this area and worked for many years as a dietitian in food services at Parkway Medical Center. She was an experienced quilter and loved to crochet and do embroidery work. She had a “green thumb” and grew beautiful flowers — the family said she planted tomato plants one year, staked them, and even the stakes sprouted. She was a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Watson (Jiggs) Carnes; a son, Reggie Carnes; and two brothers, Marvin Walker and C. B. Walker.

Survivors include a daughter, Margie Hannah of Villa Rica; her son, Ronnie Carnes of Villa Rica; two sisters, Lyndal Walker LaBrack of Loganville and Sarah Walker Tillery of Marietta; four grandchildren, Renee O-Hearn of Atlanta, Britt Hannah of South Carolina, Clint Carnes of Temple and Malachi Carnes of Roopville; eight great-grandchildren, Nathan Carnes, Logan Carnes, Mason Carnes, Brandon Lamuti, Rachel O-Hearn, Nevin O-Hearn, Kara O-Hearn and Serenna Hannah; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the J. Hoyt Thomas Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Rackley officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Villa Rica.

Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.jhoytthomas.com.
