Wesli Simmons recorded her second hat trick of the week to lead the Central High School girls’ soccer team to a 5-3 home win over Cedartown on Friday night.

The Lady Lion sophomore followed up her four-goal performance on Tuesday in the 10-0 win over Jackson, Atlanta by pushing three goals into the back of the net Friday against the Lady Bulldogs, moving Central to 3-1 on the season.

Simmons scored two goals in the first half — one off an Ellie Ligon assist — and Brenda Rodriguez accounted for the other goal to give Central the 3-0 cushion at the break.

Katelynn Jenkins set up a penalty-kick score by Ligon in the second half before Cedartown made its push, rallying for three goals in the final 10 minutes to give Central a scare before Simmons capped off her night with another goal on an assist from Darby Turner.

Lady Lion assistant coach Brittany Maddox said the squad needs to address some conditioning issues, which she said led the defensive breakdown late in the game, but was excited about the team’s overall showing.

“We had some late drama where we gave up three goals in that last 10 minutes based on conditioning. We’re still trying to build that foundation with new players, young players. So we’re still working on that conditioning. With that three goals and that drama, our girls didn’t cave under the pressure. They did come back and score again,” Maddox said.

Central travels to New Manchester on Tuesday and returns home for Region 4-AAA action on Friday against Chapel Hill.

Mt. Zion girls 5, Manchester 2: The Lady Eagles got four goals from Jessica Green, while Tori Tucker added the other score.

Mt. Zion boys 3, Manchester 2: Eagle senior Javier Martinez found the back of the net twice and also assisted on a goal by Yobel Zuniga on Friday night.

Prep Baseball

Bowdon 9, Chattahoochee County 1: The Red Devils (4-3, 1-1 Region 5-AA) bounced back from a pair of frustrating losses with a big region road win on Friday, getting a complete-game effort from senior hurler Dylan Morgan.

Morgan allowed just one run on three hits in seven innings of work, striking out 10.

Offensively, Bailey Cheatwood had four hits, Slade Parmer recorded three base knocks and Tyler McDaniel also had a multiple-hit effort with two hits. Bowdon plays its fourth game in four days — all on the road — today in a 3 p.m. contest across the state line in Ranburne (Ala.).

Bremen 8, Jordan 0: The Blue Devils (7-1-1, 4-0 Region 5-AA) continued their strong start to region play, using a complete-game shutout from sophomore southpaw Trent Jarrell in the win over the Red Jackets. Jarrell yielded just three hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

Chase Trader went 3-for-3 to lead the offense, while Jonah Stephens (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Taylor Shumake (2-for-3) and Dylan Nappi (1-for-3, RBI) also had solid nights at the plate.

Prep Golf

The Carrollton High School boys’ golf team dropped a one-stroke decision to Newnan on Thursday, firing a 172 to the Cougars’ 171.

Nick Gainey led the Trojans with a 39, followed by Rob Simpson and Nick Fazio with a pair of 41s.

The Lady Trojans shot a 143, paced by Sydney Needham’s 39. Elizabeth Curvino (49) and Mary Kate Groninger (55) rounded out Carrollton’s scorers. Newnan only had two competitors and therefore did not record a team score.
