Federal labor officials say they’ve recovered more than $226,000 in back wages for people who worked on federally-funded school construction projects in west Georgia.

Department of Labor spokesman Michael D’Aquino Monday said they found Southeastern Painting Contractors, Inc. violated minimum wage, overtime and record-keeping provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, among other offenses.

Officials say the Carrollton-based company misclassified 67 workers as independent contractors and didn’t’ pay them overtime compensation, but paid them their regular wages instead.

D’Aquino says employees were also paid lower hourly wages than what they should have received by contract.

Officials say the company has paid back wages and has agreed to comply with federal labor laws in the future.

I commented a few days ago, and my comment was accepted by the system, but today does not appear here. Wonder whose toes I stepped on? My original comment speculated that the 67 "independent contractors" might have been from the pool of "day laborers" who gather in the mornings in certain locations in Carrollton.... I wonder if the DOL checked the legal status of the 67 "independent contractors." Not accusing here, but just speculating what might have been. Be nice to see a denial.
