The Wolves offense put runs on the board, but all they really needed was one behind Jamie Sexton's stellar effort on the mound. Sexton picked up a complete game, three-hit shutout, where he struck out 10 over nine innings of work.
At the plate it was Dylan Coleman and T.J. Eifert picking up two RBI each. Coleman also had two hits in the opener and scored a pair of runs to go with Dustin Brantley's three-hit performance. Evan Hester (1-for-2, 2 runs, RBI, 3 BB), Tyler Landmon (1-for-4), Seth McClure (1-for-3, 2 runs, RBI) and Jake Shirley (1-for-3, run, BB) all recorded hits.
The nightcap added some more offense, but again it was the UWG pitcher making the difference, as Chase Riemer earned his team-high third win of the year after throwing seven scoreless innings, giving up just five hits with eight strikeouts in the complete-game shutout.
Offensively, the Wolves (9-4) wasted no time, scoring six runs in the first inning, one in the third, one in the fifth and another six in the sixth.
Blake McClemore led the offense in the second game with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with a walk, RBI and four runs scored from the leadoff spot. Hester added four RBI on two hits with a run scored and McClure had three hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while Coleman had three runs batted in. Brantley (2-for-5, 2 runs, RBI) and Eifert (2-for-5, run, 2 RBI) also had multiple hits in the game.
West Georgia will play a single game in Milledgeville on Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Georgia College & State before opening up the Gulf South Conference schedule this weekend against Christian Brothers.
UWG Softball
A solid weekend in Greenville, Tenn., ended on a high note, as the Wolves (7-4) went 4-0 on the weekend with a 6-5 win against Tusculum in the final game of the Pioneer Classic on Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning, Tusculum got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the second. UWG answered with a Katie Shults RBI double, scoring Heather Crow in the home half making it 2-1 Tusculum after two.
The Wolves took the lead in the fourth inning when Meagan Stover blasted a two-run home run to left-center, scoring Crow again to take a 3-2 lead.
Tusculum tied the game in the fifth and then took the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth, setting up a comeback, walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh.
Jordan Corbin doubled home Megan Garcia to make it 5-4 before Haley Richards brought home Langly on a bunt to tie things up at 5-all. Then, with the bases loaded, Nicole Yancey drew the walk, bringing home Danielle Combs and winning the game.
West Georgia begin its conference schedule on Saturday when the Wolves travel to Delta State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader and a 2 p.m. Sunday doubleheader at Christian Brothers.
