The men will open up on Friday night against fifth-seeded Georgia Northwest Tech at 5:30 p.m. With a win, the Golden Knights will reach the semifinals, where they would take on No. 1 Middle Georgia Tech at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The women have the second seed and face No. 3 Middle Georgia Tech on Saturday at noon in the semifinals. The finals will be played Sunday at 2 p.m.
All tournament games will be played at Middle Georgia Tech.
All-Region Teams
Six Golden Knights were honored by Region 17 when the first and second All-Region teams were announced this week.
On the men’s side, Randazzero Chaney picked up first-team honors, while Alyja Hennings and Victor Wynn were placed on the second team.
For the women, Sharika Pennamon and Sharon Forte made the first team, while Victoria Conner was a second-team selection.
WGTC Baseball
The West Georgia Tech baseball team split a doubleheader with Chattanooga State Community College on Monday, recording a 2-0 shutout in the opener before dropping an 11-1 decision in the nightcap in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Golden Knights (9-4) got two runs in the top of the seventh inning of the Game 1 win Monday, as Nic Vinson had three of WGTC’s four hits in the contest, with Blake Butcher and Dalton Thrasher driving in the two runs.
West Georgia Tech hurler Tyler Banks tossed a gem, yielding just two hits through seven shutout innings for the win, fanning five.
In the second game, Chattanooga State jumped on WGTC with a seven-run first inning. The Knights got a single run back in the second, but couldn’t overcome the big deficit, resulting in a split of the twin bill.
On Sunday afternoon, the Knights picked up a two-game sweep of Snead State at home, winning 5-4 and 7-3.
In Game 1, West Georgia Tech survived a late rally to win the ball game, 5-4. The Golden Knights led 5-0 and starting pitcher Chris Irwin had a no-hitter going into the seventh and final inning. But Snead State scored four runs to force Irwin out of the game. With the tying and lead runners on base, West Georgia Tech closer Tyler Gunnin forced two straight groundouts to first base to seal the victory.
Hudson Power, Beau Welborn and Justin Batcher each had an RBI for the Golden Knights.
In the second game, West Georgia Tech scored three runs in the first inning to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Snead State answered with three runs of its own in the third to tie the score at 3-3. WGTC scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and then two more in the sixth to close out the scoring, 7-3.
Kyle Peals went the distance for West Georgia Tech with another solid outing on the mound. The freshman Coosa product gave up three runs, but none were earned. He scattered six hits over his seven innings with two strikeouts and a walk.
Vinson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Sean Watson went 2-for-4 to lead West Georgia Tech offensively.
The Knights return to action on Friday at home against Southern Union in a 1 p.m. contest in Douglasville.
