Joining the Wolves are 17 high school players, while another five are coming to Carrollton as transfers and are already enrolled at UWG. The pair of locals highlighting the list are former Carrollton High School defensive back Carlos Hutton, who is transferring from Carson-Newman, and Central High School senior defensive back Dresden Thornton.
“We want to start by thanking everyone who had a part in helping with our recruiting process,” UWG coach Daryl Dickey said. “There is a great deal of effort and sacrifice from the entire university community that goes into making our recruiting visits successful. I am also very appreciative of our coaching staff. Led by our recruiting coordinator, Louis LeBlanc, the entire football and athletic staff has done an outstanding job.”
Along with Hutton, Tev’n Hamilton — a former all-state performer at Darlington — is transferring from Eastern Kentucky, while rounding out the transfers are Jackson Bland from Morehead State, Alex Lakes from Air Force and Phillip Warren from Marshall.
Hamilton, Hutton and Warren are all defensive backs, while Bland is a defensive lineman and Lakes is listed as an athlete. That group joins running back Derik Seward out of Butte College in California, who has already transferred and signed with UWG.
Nine of the 17 prep recruits will play on the defensive side, including defensive backs Thornton, Josh Hearn out of Chattahoochee High School, Kendall Conley out of Whitewater, Luke Gibbs of Stephens County and Kimball McGee of Westside Macon. On the line are Malik Harris of Whitewater, Quin Latimer from Washington County, Connor Calvert from Gainsville and defensive end Brian Whitaker, also of Westside Macon.
The offensive prep group is led by Class AAAAAA state champion quarterback Joseph Wilbur of Norcross, linemen Harley Vaughn of Dawson County, Reno Messler of Jackson County and Jok O’Barr from Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe, and then wide receiver Michael Cheeks from Mill Creek.
The Wolves also added a pair of special teamers in Sandy Creek kicker Mitchell McMillin and Grant Gabriel, a kicker from Camden County.
Dickey expects to add additional signees before the end of the 2013 recruiting period.
