The University of West Georgia baseball team earned an opening-day sweep of Miles to kick off its 2013 campaign, collecting a 2-1 victory in the opener and cruising to a 15-5 decision in the nightcap on Saturday at Cole Field.

Chase Riemer received the nod to start the opening game against the Golden Bears, pitching five innings and giving up four hits and one run. He also struck out five and walked one.

The Wolves got their two runs on an Evan Hester double in the bottom of the third, which brought home Shaquille Jackson and Keith Borger.

Jackson had a perfect game at the plate, going 3-for-3 and scoring the go-ahead run. Jackson also had a game-saving outfield assist when he hosed one of Miles’ players at the plate.

Sophomore Alex Allen was called on to get West Georgia out of a jam in the top of the seventh inning with one out. Allen got the first batter to fly out to right and then struck out the next batter to get the Wolves their first win and his first save of the season.

In Game 2, UWG (2-0) pounded out 15 runs on 13 hits, with Jackson going 3-for-4 with three RBI.

West Georgia concludes the three-game series with a 1 p.m. first pitch today at Cole Field.

UWG Basketball

The UWG women’s basketball team suffered a 62-54 Gulf South Conference setback against Shorter on Saturday in Rome, where the Wolves (12-7, 6-5 GSC) scored just 12 points in the opening half to fall behind by 18 at the break. West Georgia battled back, scoring 42 points in the second half, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

Senior guard Mone’ Peoples scored 24 points to lead UWG, while Ieshia Alexander led Shorter (12-7, 7-4) with 21 points.

The UWG men’s basketball team also came up short on Saturday, dropping an 85-61 decision to the Hawks (14-5, 8-3), who placed four scorers in double-figures offensively.

Freshman Deontre Brown led the Wolves (7-12, 4-7) with 16 points.

West Georgia Tech Baseball

The WGTC baseball team split a doubleheader with Vincennes College on Saturday, winning a 5-2 decision and dropping a 3-1 contest.

In the 5-2 win, the Golden Knights scored three runs in the first and Blake Butcher went 2-for-2 at the plate with a single and a triple.

In the two-run setback, the visitors plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to break the 1-all tie and hold on for the win in the bottom of the frame.

West Georgia Tech Softball

The WGTC softball team split a pair of games on Saturday at the Darton College Tournament in Albany, defeating Wallace Dothan in a 10-5 affair and falling to Southern Union, 4-2.

In the opening-game setback, Kayla Castle had the Golden Knights’ lone hit, while Kristen Massey had four base knocks and four RBI in the second game, with Castle adding two more in the win.

WGTC returns home to host Chattahochee Valley Community College today in a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Douglasville.
