McClure, Bremen boys trump Temple

Trent McClure paved the way to a 73-63 victory in the Region 5B-AA opener for the Bremen High School boys’ basketball team on Saturday afternoon, dropping 30 points on the host Tigers at Temple Middle School.

Nick Forrister added 20 points for the Blue Devils (7-9, 1-0 Region 5B-AA), who are now 2-1 against the Tigers (4-10, 0-1) this season, though Saturday’s contest was the most important of the three ball games since it counts toward the region standings.

Trevor Shell led Temple with 19 points, while Rashaan Dobbs scored 17 and Isaiah Strozier finished with 16 points.

Heard County girls 48, Bowdon 45:
The Red Devilettes (7-6) suffered the narrow setback to the Lady Braves (6-6) in Franklin, getting 15 points from Reshay Brewer, while Katlyn Buchanan scored 10 points and Jacole Stephens finished with eight.

Mt. Zion boys 79, Ranburne (Ala.) 42: The Eagles (9-6) placed four scorers in double figures, led by Corey Loftin with 15 points, while Nathan Bernhardt and T.K. Tuggle each scored 12 and Jason McCubbin added 10.

Mt. Zion girls 50, Ranburne (Ala.) 35: The Lady Eagles (8-7) took a break from region play and picked up a 15-point win across the state line.

MZ was led by Toni Hammond’s 16-point effort, while Jennifer Bagby added 11 points in the victory.

Next week the Lady Eagles will host Excel Christian on Friday at 6 p.m. in a return to Region 6A-A play.

Oak Mountain Academy girls 45, Harvester Christian 32: The Lady Warriors (14-1) were led by Jordan Francis with 14 points, while Meredith Sammon added 12.

Oak Mountain Academy boys 57, Harvester Christian 25: With starting point guard Blake Mason sidelined with a bruised thigh, the Warriors (13-2) used a collective effort on Saturday. Wade Mason and Colton Pollard both scored 14 points, while Kelton Hunt posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and James Hughes also reached double figures with 10 points.

Villa Rica girls 50, Hiram 36: On Friday night, the Lady Wildcats (12-5, 6-2 Region 5-AAAAA) rode the hot hand of Rhianna Warren, who went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc to lead the way with 17 points, while Britney Wright added 15 points — hitting 9-of-11 free throws — to go along with five rebounds and four steals.
