The Douglasville man accused of robbing the SunTrust branch on Highway 61 near Villa Rica in November was denied bond Wednesday.

Anthony Rasul Garrett, 20, allegedly robbed the bank on the afternoon of Nov. 24 with at least two other accomplices, Curtis Lavert Raiford, 20, of Hampton, and Ronald Jabriel Robinson, 19, also of Douglasville.

Garrett's attorney, public defender Valerie Cooke, asked for a reasonable bond, but Judge John Simpson denied the defendant's motion.

The state opposed bond, with Assistant District Attorney Herb Cranford saying the crime was "very serious."

"This was a violent and brazen crime," Cranford said. "The men went into this bank with cloths over their faces and guns in their hands. It's a very serious crime, and we oppose bond of any kind."

Garrett has been charged with armed robbery, as well as other various charges, including attempting to elude police.

An eyewitness and two deputies who happened to be nearby played key roles in the quick capture of the three men.

Garrett and Raiford allegedly walked into the branch just before the bank closed at noon and produced a handgun, said Capt. Jeff Richards of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. Robinson, Richards said, was waiting in the getaway car outside the bank.

As two suspects left the bank after the robbery to meet their car, an eyewitness alerted officials. Two deputies in the area, Steve Young and Justin Moore, began giving chase, joined soon after by several other officers, including Villa Rica police.

The suspects were pursued into Douglas County, exiting Interstate 20 onto Post Road, where they bailed out of their car after crashing it. Two suspects were caught immediately by Carroll County officers, with the third caught in the woods by a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office canine unit after a perimeter had been set up.

There were no injuries reported inside the bank, Richards said.

The suspects were returned to Carroll County.

Cranford said the case may be turned over the federal authorities, with Cooke reminding the court that it has not been turned over yet.

• A Carrollton man was sentenced Wednesday to five years in jail for allegedly attempting to rob a family at gunpoint in their home last year.

Derrick Lincoln Laye, 20, pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, aggravated assault and criminal attempt of armed robbery. Simpson sentenced him to five years in jail, followed by 10 years of probation.

Laye, along with three co-defendants (one of whom is a minor), was arrested shortly after the four of them allegedly entered a county residence, reportedly to get "money or drugs," the prosecution said.

The incident occurred on April 23, 2012.

Two of the co-defendants, Xavier Boston and a juvenile, intimidated two household members with firearms, police said.

Boston and the fourth co-defendant, Ellie Ross, have cases pending in Carroll County Superior Court on similar charges. The juvenile pleaded guilty in Juvenile Court, and received three years in a juvenile detention center.

The four suspects left the residence before any money or illegal substances could be taken, which Cranford said substantiates the "criminal attempt" portion of Laye's charge.

"They left the house before they could complete the robbery," Cranford said, "but they went into the house with the intent to rob them."

Laye's legal counsel, Carrollton attorney Nathaniel Smith, said the defendant was "a week away" from attaining his barber's license at West Georgia Technical College when he was arrested.

The defendant was given credit back to April 24, 2012, when he was arrested, toward his incarceration.
