New Manchester came out of the gate slowly, going down 10-4 after the first period. The Lady Jags picked up their offensive game in the second period and went into the half, trailing 25-14. New Manchester was outscored 18-12 in the third period but managed to outscore North Clayton 16-14 in the fourth, but it was too little too late for a comeback bid.
“We were lethargic and did not play good defense in the first half,” said NMHS coach Josh Martin. “We played better in the second half, but could not come back.”
The Lady Jags entered the tourney looking to improve on a struggling season so far and they were able to see positive signs in the loss. They also have the added advantage of playing a tourney at the same school their region tournament will be played.
Senior Alyssa Harris and freshman Deesha Brefford led New Manchester with 13 points each against North Clayton.
“Deesha did some good things against their zone,” Martin said. “She is a consistent threat from the outside.”
“Alyssa did a good job rebounding the ball,” Martin added. “She is really picking up her offensive as the season progresses.”
The Lady Jags will play in their second game of the tourney today at 1 p.m.
