The Eagles were led by a trio of individual champions in Ashton Robinson at 106 pounds, along with Fernando Valles (145) and Will Sizemore (hvy.).
Also placing for Mt. Zion was Efren Valles in second place (138), Javier Martinez (132), Daniel Anderson (182) and Buddha McClure (220) in third and Hunter Smith (120), Tryston Cash (160) and Nathan Whaley (195) in fourth.
“I’m really proud of the boys. They wrestled hard. It’s going to be something that’s going to help us get better prepared for that Area Duals coming up in January,” Eagle coach Michael Cleek said.
Even without some key pieces, the Villa Rica High School wrestling was able to pick up a third-place finish at Pepperell, including three grapplers taking first place.
“We wrestled without a couple of our guys, and to be able to come away with a third-place trophy in a tough tournament and placing four guys, it was definitely a full team effort. We won third place by half a point. What everybody did, everybody contributed. Even those guys that did not place. That shows me that our team can pull together when we need it the most,” VR coach Kyle Seeley said. “I think, team-wise, we’re definitely coming along. There’s still room for improvement, though.”
Josh Ivey took the 113-pound title, picking up three pins on the day, while Tristan Ware (132) won what was considered to be the toughest weight class in the tournament and Demetris Flemister (220) came out with a first-place finish after being the third seed. Maurice McGuire was the other VR placer, taking fourth in the 182-pound weight class.
Bremen Wrestling
The Bremen High School wrestling team took third place at the Kyle Maynard Duals at Collins Hill High School on Saturday, upsetting the host team by a 37-36 tally and also beating Loganville (51-18) and North Gwinnett (40-30). Pope, which finished second to Brandon High School out of Florida, handed the Blue Devils their lone loss.
Central Wrestling
The Central High School wrestling team took seven wrestlers to the Hardaway Invitational in Columbus on Saturday, with senior Jarrett Thomas leading the squad with a first-place finish at 160 pounds, going 4-0 with one pin.
Rounding out the Lions’ placers was Avery Ward (120) in fourth and Kirey Thompson (195) in seventh.
In JV action, the Lions competed at the Walt Hennebaul JV Tournament at Mill Creek High School, where Aaron Smith (220) recorded a first-place finish, while Gabe Wiggins (170) came in third, Daniel Moye (170) and Chaz Velez (182) placed fourth, Bo Ly (132) took fifth and Trilan Howell (120) and Michael Paea (182) came in seventh.
Prep Basketball
The Holy Ground Baptist Academy boys’ basketball team suffered a 68-33 setback to Creekside on Friday night, getting a double-double from Chandler Dedman with 17 points and 18 rebounds.
On Thursday evening, the Stallions dropped a 65-33 decision to Praise Academy, where Dedman once again led the way, scoring 20 points with 16 rebounds. Blake Lee added 11 points.
The Holy Ground junior-varsity squad fell to Creekside, 32-30, on Friday in overtime, getting an 11-point effort from Michael Yates, with Lee chipping in nine. On Friday, Praise topped the Stallions, 52-27, with Yates leading the way with nine points. Maxim Spruell added six points off the bench for Holy Ground.
