Chapel Hill kicked off the boys game on a 5-0 run only to see it slip away with a Jaguar run of the same total. The Panthers would go up 9-5 and again the Jags tied the game. With 3:55 to play, New Manchester took their first lead, 11-9 and then over the next minute and a half increased it quickly, going up 18-9 with 2:23 to play in the first quarter.
After a technical foul and shots from the line gave Chapel Hill 11 points, New Manchester’s Keymont Jenkins hit a 3-point shot for a 24-11 lead. A late layup by the Panthers cut the deficit to 11 as the quarter ended.
The Jags played with a 10-point lead for most of the second quarter before going up 14 on a pair of Jenkins free throws. With three minutes to play in the half, Chapel Hill cut the deficit to 10 again after a pair of foul shots from Jaymarius Turner. New Manchester led 36-26.
The Jags poured the on points with two minutes left before the half with Jenkins and Joe Boyer hitting back-to-back 3-pointers. That outburst put the Jags up by 16. New Manchester played solidly on the defensive end as well with Ryan Edwards coming up with a big block on a layup. Chapel Hill scored most of their points in the quarter on free throws, connecting on 13-of-14. They had only six points from the field.
Jenkins led all scorers in the first half with 14 points. Boyer added 11 and Edwards netted eight.
Aries Phoenix quietly led Chapel over the first two quarters with seven points.
The Jaguars quickly increased their lead to 51-32 within the first minute of the third quarter. New Manchester took a 20-plus point lead for the first time in the game with 5:46 on the clock.
Chapel Hill fought back over the final minutes of the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 12. However, New Manchester went into the final eight minutes up 59-46.
The Jags regrouped and pulled away to start the fourth quarter, eventually going up 67-46 on a Boyer layup with five minutes to play. Jenkins then sliced his way through the Panther defense and Boyer dropped in a free throw for a 24 point lead. A minute later Jenkins added two more free throws to go up by 26. Chapel Hill did not put their first points of the fourth until 3:32 remained on the clock. The Jags held on for a 29 point victory.
Jenkins led all scorers with 22 points, Boyer added 18 and Edwards followed with 16 for the Jags. Turner led Chapel Hill with 12 points. Phoenix netted 10.
GIRLS GAME
Through the opening five minutes of the girls game, Chapel Hill capitalized on turnovers that led to layups, while New Manchester went to the line and knocked down free throw after free throw. With 3:15 on the clock, the Lady Jags trailed only 11-9. However, the Lady Panthers pulled away over the final three minutes for a 17-9 first quarter lead.
The second quarter was nearly all Chapel Hill. The Lady Panthers continued their consecutive points streak, eventually taking a 27-9 lead with 1:47 on the clock thanks to five points in under a minute by Jazmine Lawrence.
New Manchester finally broke their 10-minute scoreless streak when freshman Deesha Brefford connected for two points with 1:30 to play. After a Lady Panther score, Brefford hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 29-14. A single free throw by both teams ended the first half with Chapel Hill up 30-15.
Lawrence netted a game high 11 points over the first two quarters for the Lady Panthers. Alex Weems followed with six points. Brefford and Deshauna Smith had five points each for the Lady Jags.
Both teams were solid from the line, connecting on 14-of-18 shots total.
The Lady Jags inched a little closer in the third quarter, which was a stalemate for over seven minutes. In a low scoring third, Chapel Hill remained 15 points ahead until nearly the buzzer when New Manchester’s Alexus Sharpley broke free from the group and scored on a layup. Five seconds later the quarter ended with the Lady Panthers up 35-22. The Lady Jags outscore Chapel Hill in the third, 7-5.
Breeford got New Manchester a little closer to open the final quarter when a layup cut the Lady Panther lead to 11. Chapel Hill began to pull away at the midway point of the fourth when Ashley Chestnut connected on back-to-back long jumpers to put the Lady Panthers up 41-26.
Smith followed with a layup for New Manchester but Erica Jones knocked down a shot from behind the arch for Chapel Hill. A free throw by the Lady Jags and a two-point play by the Lady Panthers made the score 46-29 with with three minutes to play.
With 1:39 to go, New Manchester’s Alysia Harris hit two free throws, pulling the team to within 15 points once again. With a minute to play Chestnut hit a jumper for a 48-31 Lady Panther lead. It would be the last score of the game.
Chapel Hill would take the win but New Manchester earned a moral victory in the second half, dropping those final two quarter by only two points, 18-16.
Chestnut led all scorers with 12 points in the game. Lawrence did not score in the second half but finished with 11. Weems added eight and Earnicia Washington scored seven.
Smith and Brefford led the Lady Jags with nine points each. Harris added six.
