Three days short of 92 years of age, Carl Roy Scheibel passed away on December 10, 2012. He was born December 13, 1920, in Buffalo, New York, the son of Edward and Nora Scheibel. One of six children, Carl knew the value of a dollar and hard work.
Carl served in World War II as a pharmacist’s mate in the U.S. Navy and participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Later in life, he put his money skills to use as an accountant.
Carl had a passion for life and never let his age or conventional limitations slow him down. He led by example as both a brave and selfless man. He had a quick wit and a great sense of humor. Carl loved living by the lake and was an avid water-skier, boater, and fisherman. He was always active and enjoyed square dancing, baking, and wood-working.
Carl was a dedicated husband and father who instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty Scheibel. Following her death, Carl spent three years with Hazel Jacobsen prior to her passing.
He is survived by his children, Chris (Phil) Demma, Dr. William (Pam) Scheibel, Claudia Scheibel-Iverson (Dennis), Carole Scheibel-Schmitt (Dennis), and Craig Scheibel (fiancé Gail Morris), along with 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to the Benton House in Newnan, Georgia, for embracing Carl into their community and to Dr. Randall Pierce of Northwest Georgia Oncology Center for his guidance in Carl’s care. Additional thanks to the staff at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carl’s name to: Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, 1762 Clifton Road, Suite 1400 Atlanta, GA 30322.
