Alexander’s Lindsay Dowling and Bailee Spivey posted state qualifying times to lead the Cougars to an easy win in a tri meet with Lithia Springs and New Manchester in the first half of an intra-county doubleheader Friday at the Boundary Waters Aquatics Center, and Chapel Hill wrapped things up by downing Douglas County in a dual meet with state qualifying times in two events from freshman Kamaria Mahone.

Dowling, a sophomore, won with state times in the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.24) and 100 backstroke (1:03.94) and Spivey qualified for state in the 200 freestyle with winning time of 2:06.87 as Alexander racked up 99 total team points. New Manchester was second with 34 points and Lithia Springs was third with 10 points.

“Those are our two horses,” Alexander coach Rick Blackstone said. “We’re going to ride those horses… They’re very dominant swimmers. Their best competition is each other.”

Dowling and Spivey were also on two winning relay teams – the 200 medley relay team with Olivia Albanese and Hannah Williams and the 200 freestyle relay with Albanese and Haleigh Stone.

Lithia Springs senior Zephinah Barney posted the other state qualifying time in the tri meet with a 26.24 in the 50 freestyle.

Ian Burks had two individual wins for Alexander’s boys, taking first in the 200 freestyle (2:24.65) and 100 butterfly (1:09.24). Burks was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team with Jacob King, Broc DuCharme and Jonathan McKinley and the winning 200 freestyle relay with Caleb Rogers, Lance Smith and Jamel Brown.

Alexander also got wins from Rogers in the boys 200 IM, DuCharme in the boys 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Williams in the girls 100 butterfly and Albanese in the 100 freestyle.

New Manchester’s Darian Griffith won the boys 50 freestyle with a 29.49, while Lady Jag Raven Dunlap posted a win in the 100 breaststroke.

In addition to Barney’s win in the 50 freestyle, Lithia Springs also had a winner in the boys 100 backstroke where Michael Haire took first with a 1:32.50.

In the nightcap, Chapel Hill racked up 109 points to Douglas County’s 66 for the win.

Mahone, a freshman, had already qualified for state in the 200 IM, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Her win in the 100 backstroke (1:01.04) Friday gives her two state times in the event and she added the 50 freestyle to her growing state resume with a winning time of 25.40.

“She didn’t think she was going to break 26 and she broke it today,” Chapel Hill coach Chad Miller said. “It was awesome.”

Hannah Austin won two events for Chapel Hill, taking the 200 IM (3:02.68) and the 100 butterfly (1:31.62). Emily Austin won the 100 freestyle for the Panthers with a 1:13.87.

Joshua Thurston won the 200 IM (2:17.18) and 100 backstroke (1:03.31) for Chapel Hill's boys, just missing state times in both.

Jonathan Peraza and Thunwa Klaihathai each had two wins to lead Douglas County. Peraza won the boys 100 butterfly (1:14.25) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.24). Klaihathai took first in the girls 200 freestyle (2:56.02) and 100 breaststroke (1:33.27).

Andrew Norton also picked up a win for the Tigers, taking first in the 50 freestyle with a 26.22.

Chapel Hill’s Brennen Palmaffy and Eric Lloyd tied for the win in the boys 100 freestyle with identical times of 1:12.58. Palmaffy also won the 200 freestyle with a 2:59.49.

Chapel Hill dominated all four relay events. Thurston, Chase Hancock, Zahir Eaton and Juaquin Eldridge teamed up to win the boys 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

On the girls’ side, Mahone, Hannah Austin, Bri Mayo and Emily Gaver were part Chapel Hill’s winning girls 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
