The season came to an end on Friday night for the Bowdon High School football team, which suffered a 66-28 setback at Washington-Wilkes in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs in Washington.

The third-seeded Red Devils (8-3) got themselves in a hole early, as they trailed 21-0 after the first quarter. Washington-Wilkes (10-1) added 10 more points in the second quarter, but Bowdon did get on the board to trail 31-7 at halftime.

In the second half, the Red Devils made a push, cutting it to an 18-point game at 38-20, but the Tigers would make it 45-20 by the end of the third quarter before finishing the game off in the fourth.

In its first season in Class AA, Bowdon enjoyed a memorable season and returns a strong nucleus of players from this year’s third-place squad. Washington-Wilkes moves on to face top-ranked and defending state champion Calhoun in the second round.

Bowdon coach Dwight Hochstetler could not be reached for comment as of press time Friday night.
