While the win did put the Wolves at 2-0 to start the year, Scott Groninger is less worried about the record. What the UWG coach is focused on is how the offseason work is paying off, how the team with 10 new players is coming together early in the year and the next game.
"At the end of the day we're not really focused on [being 2-0] right now. This game's over, we're getting ready for Augusta State on Thursday. These kids have worked hard all through the preseason, through the closed scrimmage sessions. I don't think this group's surprised by that, but we'll see. A lot of work to do to get ready for Thursday," Groninger said.
Taylor Turgeon led a balanced scoring attack as almost every UWG (2-0) player to step on the floor got on the score sheet. The junior college transfer had 15 points on the night while Angela Davis added 13 points. Jerlisa Taylor, Shakiyla McLin and Mone' Peoples scored nine points each. Taylor was just one point off a double-double as she led with 10 rebounds.
"I think, for the most part, I was pleased offensively. We took a couple crazy shots there with some kids trying to get in a rhythm. The second half we were trying to work on some things. I think the team is pretty unselfish offensively and those teams are going to do well. Defensively I thought we had our moments where we kind of lapsed, but overall a good team win," Groninger said.
Not only did the Wolves get the job done offensively, they also held Point (1-5) to under 50 points and forced 27 turnovers on the night.
By the time the Skyhawks reached double figures on the scoreboard the Wolves were up 27-11 and never looked back taking a 22-point lead into halftime. From 4:57 left in the first half UWG's lead would never go below 20 points and got as high as 33 late in the second half.
Now the Wolves will use three more home games to get ready for a tough start to the Gulf South Conference slate. Up next is Augusta State at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
"That is definitely good. We're going to need [these home games] because two of our first three conference games are at University of Alabama-Huntsville and a very good, very well coached West [Alabama] team that's picked second, Huntsville is picked first. Two of our first three conference games are against the top two teams on the road. We love playing in here. I thought the fan support was outstanding [Tuesday]. Great student body participation, we were really pleased with that," Groninger said.
