The Carroll County Humane Society will hold its annual Fun Dog Show today in East Carrollton Park, behind the Chamber of Commerce.

Registration will begin at noon and the show starts at 1 p.m. The registration fee for entering a dog is $20, which includes a custom-designed Fun Dog Show T-shirt, designed by Debrah Santini. The event is open to the public; there is no admission charge.

Dr. Fred Richards will be the master of ceremonies. Judges will include Dr. Amanda Bullard, veterinarian at Carroll County Animal Hospital; Kim Horsley, vet tech at Carrollton Animal Hospital; and Dr. Jimmy Gentry, senior pastor at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Keri Ashworth is in charge of the show.

Competition categories will include obstacle course, best kisser, best trick, best costume, cutest under 35 pounds and cutest over 35 pounds.

“We’ll have a bake sale, with treats for humans and dogs,” Humane Society President Teresa Leslie said. “There will also be a raffle with many great prizes from local and Atlanta merchants and a face painter.”

The Humane Society will have its collar exchange, where dog owners can swap their shock, prong or choke collars for a free harness.

Shelter dogs will be available for adoption at the event, with reduced prices for the October Adopt a Shelter Dog Month observation.

“We’re celebrating this month by subsidizing adoption fees on dogs from the Carroll County Animal Shelter,” Leslie said. “Instead of the usual $115 adoption fee, the fee this month is $55 for small dogs and puppies, and $35 dollars for dogs over 40 pounds and dogs over the age of 3. The Humane Society picks up the rest of the cost.”

She said the dogs come complete with spaying or neutering, microchipping, negative heartworm test, rabies vaccine, parvo/distemper vaccine and a one-year complimentary membership in Carroll County Humane Society.

Leslie said the Carroll County Humane Society is working on a pet cookbook, due for publication in December, in time for holiday giving. Susan Holland is coordinating the project.

“We’re inviting the public to submit recipes for food and treats for their dogs, cats or other pets,” Leslie said. “The recipes will be published in our ‘Happy Pets Cookbook.’ Proceeds from the cookbook sales will benefits Humane Society programs, including Empty Pet Bowls, the Angel Fund and the Rainbow Fund.”

Leslie said submissions must be received by Oct. 29, and should include the recipe, contributor’s full name, contact number or e-mail address, and brief description of the person submitting and his/her pets for inclusion in the contributors section.

Recipe submissions can be e-mailed to happypetscookbook@gmail.com or by mail to: Carroll County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1304, Carrollton, GA 30112.

“Dr. Jason Harden of Carroll County Animal Hospital will look over the recipes to make sure there’s nothing in them that make dogs sick,” Leslie said. “Samples of treats made from submitted recipes will be sold at the Saturday Fun Dog Show and participants can submit their recipes at the event.”
