George Hester Ray was born on Sept. 4, 1943, in Fulton County, Ga., to the late Josephine Ophelia Hester Ray and Edward Hester Ray.

George was educated in the Atlanta Public School System at Booker T. Washington High School. George began his career working in maintenance at a number of apartment complexes in the Atlanta area and working as an apprentice painter under his uncle, Frank Hester.

But George loved to cook, something that he learned from his mother, and he went on to become quite the chef in his later years. He worked at numerous restaurants in the Carrollton and Villa Rica, Ga., area, including such places as the Preston House, T.C. Rose, the VFW and the Watering Hole Sports Grill. He has become known as “Chef George” to everyone that knows him. George retired four years ago.

George departed this life on Oct. 4, 2012, and leaves to cherish his memory: two brothers and their spouses, Mr. and Mrs. Edward H. Ray of California, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ray of Atlanta, Ga.; one aunt, Forestine Brewer; nieces and nephews, Angela, Olympia, Harold Jr., Latonya, Yolanda, Ellis, Rodney, Kortney, and Robert Jr.; along with many cousins, uncles, other family members and friends. Also, his dear friend of 40 years, Bonnie Taylor, and her family, who adopted George as part of their family many years ago.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home, 306 Westview Drive, Villa Rica, Ga.
