The Wildcats (2-3, 2-3 Region 5-AAAAA) are coming off a 50-point effort in last week's win against Woodland, Cartersville. With a winless Lion squad coming to Sam McIntyre Stadium Villa Rica has the chance to put together back-to-back wins for the first time since they defeated Lithia Springs 33-12 as part of a five-game streak last season.
"Obviously any time you win it's accomplishing what you go out there for. I guess we had gone a couple weeks without a win so we needed to go and beat a team I felt like we were better than. Now we get ready for this one coming Friday and hopefully carry some of that good feeling into the next week," VR coach Mike Falleur said.
Even though the Lions (0-5, 0-5) come into Friday's game without a win VR will not take them lightly. Lithia Springs lost its season opener by just a touchdown to New Manchester and only lost by just three points to Paulding County two weeks ago.
"You watch them on film and they are a very athletic football team. They have had chances to put a lot of pressure on people. Again, it's one of those things where they're coming in here looking at us thinking they have a chance to win their first ball game. We've got to do the best we can to have a chance to win our third. It's two teams that I think are still pretty hungry looking for a win," Falleur said.
The 50 points VR scored last year eclipsed the total offense they had put up through the first four games of the season. Including being shut out two weeks ago the Wildcat offense had only managed 37 points through its first four games and never reached 20 points.
Now, at the midpoint of the season the VR coach hopes this can be a turning point for the offense.
"I hope so. It gives you a little confidence in what you're doing and how you're doing it. It ought to make yourself feel better than the week before when we didn't score. It will help, yes," Falleur said.
Another thing the Wildcats have going for them is a return home. VR will play three of their final five games at home, including this week and the final two games of the regular season. And as Falleur noted, it is always good to play at home.
"I always think playing at home helps, everybody enjoys it a little more. You play in front of your crowd, it's your place, you don't have to get on a bus and go anywhere, every thing's just a little easier," Falleur said.
A win would pull the Wildcats to an even 3-3 on the year and put them right back in the middle of a playoff hunt in Region 5-AAAAA. The road wouldn't be easy with three of the four games left against top teams in the region, but it would give VR a chance going down the stretch.
"It puts you in a position to finish the right way. We've got four games left and they're all pretty good football teams. It ought to give you confidence, it ought to get you going in the right direction to finish the right way. Again, with as not a young football team as it was. Halfway through [the season] these guys aren't really sophomores any more. There's a lot of young guys playing so [a win Friday] should give you confidence finishing out this year and going into next year," Falleur said.
