Shaw High quarterback Chandler Whittlesey was a one-man show during the Raiders’ 41-12 victory over visiting Alexander before a large homecoming crowd at Kinnett Stadium on Friday night.

Whittlesey had a hand, or foot, in five of the Raiders’ six touchdowns.

The senior entered the contest with three rushing touchdowns and eight through the air. Against the Cougars, he ran for four and threw for another.

Whittlesey and the Raiders jumped on Alexander early and often, scoring on their first three possessions and jumping to a 21-6 first-quarter lead. Shaw set the tone with its opening drive. The Raiders took the opening kickoff at their own 32 and marched 68 yards in only five plays. Whittlesey gained most of the yardage on the initial drive through the air, but scored on a keeper from 27 yards out and the game just over two minutes old.

A Cougar fumble on their ensuing possession put the Raiders in business at the Alexander 28. It took four plays this time and another Whittlesey run, from eight yards out, to put Shaw up 14-0 with 7:08 left in the first.

Alexander responded with a drive of its own, moving 66 yards in eight plays. The Cougars utilized the run for six plays, but went to the air for the last two.

On third down from the Shaw 32, quarterback Brian Dansereau found tight end Brandon Walton across the middle for a 26-yard strike on a key possession play. Dansereau hit tailback Mikell Lands for a two-yard strike to put the Cougars on the board. The extra point failed and Shaw led 14-6.

Desmond Gomillia scored the first of his two touchdowns for the Raiders to give Shaw a comfortable lead, 21-6, in the waning minutes of the opening quarter. Gomillia scooted around the left end for a 17-yard score.

The 21-6 score held up throughout the second quarter and Alexander got the ball to start the second half. The Cougars narrowed the Shaw lead with a 65-yard drive, all on the ground. The Cougars went for two and failed. They trimmed the Raider lead to nine, 21-12, but that was as close as they could get.

The Raiders scored 21 unanswered points to put the game away. Whittlesey scored on a pair of runs from two and three yards out, then ended the scoring in spectacular fashion.

On first down from the Shaw 14 midway through the fourth quarter, Whittlesey hit Gomillia with a short pass and Gomillia did the rest. He raced 86 yards for the Raiders’ final score.

Shaw is now 3-2 overall and 0-1 in Region 5-AAAA. The Raiders travel to Sandy Creek next weekend. Alexander has lost eight in a row and falls to 0-5, 0-1 in the region. AHS will travel to LeGrange next Friday.
